Lunch time well spent with Mavi 🐾
In our 30-minute visit we worked on his “lay down” command, reinforced potty training, practiced recall, enjoyed outdoor time, and finished with play, cuddles, and lunch. Mental stimulation and structure are just as important as exercise, especially for puppies! Setting him up for a sleepy afternoon until his owner returns ☺️

Sweet Honey 🍯 – a seven-year-old Romanian rescue – and a little reminder that I have plenty of experience with nervous and sensitive pups who just need time, patience, and kindness.

When I arrived, Honey was unsure without her owner home, so we took things slowly. I waited for her to feel safe, let her set the pace, and soon enough we were off on a gentle walk, followed by dinner and a well-earned cuddle 🤍

Here's my crate routine I follow every time we nap or sleep for a successful happy pup: (with a tip on how to correct when pup gives you a down instead of sit)
1) Awake for 90 mins before with lots of enrichment, exercise and training.
2) Something fun like a stuffed Kong, puzzle ball or dentastick in his crate!
3) Cover to create distraction free dark environment!
And that's it! We've done this since 12 weeks old for every nap and you can see he loves his routine and we can safely get things done without waking him every 5 mins!

Teaching my little guy self control with clarity, not confusion 🧠🐾

I always give a separate reward before the release cue — and this is why ⬇️

When I place treats on the ground, my dog is in a down + wait. Those treats are not available yet, even though they’re right in front of him. Before I ever say the release word, I calmly reward him from my hand for holding the wait.

This teaches an important concept:
➡️ Waiting is one behavior
➡️ Getting released to food is a different behavior

By separating the two, he learns that food on the ground doesn’t automatically mean he can take it. If there’s ever something unsafe, dropped food, or a distraction on the floor, he understands that only the release cue makes it fair game — not the presence of food itself.

That extra hand-fed reward builds:
• impulse control
• clarity around boundaries
• confidence in waiting for guidance

Short sessions, calm corrections, lots of clarity. By round 3, no corrections needed 🖤

I had unrealistic puppy expectations… and my puppy humbled me REAL fast 🫠🐶
So here are 3 expectations I had and what actually helped ⬇️

1️⃣ Expectation:
“He’ll walk nicely on the lead because… why wouldn’t he?”
Reality:
Every walk was a negotiation, protest, or full-body refusal.
Fix:
I stopped expecting “perfect walks” and started rewarding tiny wins - lots of walking up and down the driveway using s U turn and green circle method and now he’s so so much better already!

2️⃣ Expectation:
“If I exercise him enough, he’ll be calm at home.”
Reality:
An overtired puppy = a feral puppy.
Fix:
More enforced naps, and sticking to wake windows that are recommended for his age. I learned that puppies need rest just as much as stimulation — enforced nap times saved my sanity.

3️⃣ Expectation:
“He’ll know I’m the boss and listen because I love him.”
Reality:
Love is not a training plan.
Fix:
Clear boundaries + consistency. Same rules every day, calm energy, and teaching him what to do instead of just correcting what not to do.

Raising a puppy isn’t about having the “perfect dog” — it’s about becoming the kind of human they can learn from 💛
If you’re in the thick of puppy chaos… you’re not failing. You’re learning.
