🐾WHOOPSIE WONDER DOG WEDNESDAY 🐾
This wonder dog Wednesday is also our whoopsie dog Wednesday, Fergal.
Fergal had decided to eat a whole sponge 🧽 and unfortunately this caused a blockage as it couldn’t pass the stomach.
Needless to say the sponge had to be removed surgically. Fergal has made a remarkable recovery thanks to the wonderful team at Highland Health Vets and we hope that he chooses to stay out of trouble for his wonderful , happy and healthy future 🐾💕
It can be quite common for young dogs to run off with items and swallow them in a panic thinking that you will try take it away.
To get a dog or cat to drop an item rather than swallowing it, never chase them or physically force their mouth open, as this triggers panic and a quick swallow reflex. Instead, use high-value treats to distract them or make an exciting, sudden movement elsewhere to break their fixation.
🐕The Scatter Method:
Drop a handful of smelly, high-value treats (like small pieces of cheese or hot dog) on the floor away from the item. The scatter reflex will force them to open their mouth and drop what they are holding to eat the treats.
🐶The “Drop It” Game:
When you need them to drop a specific item, say “Drop it” or “Trade” in an upbeat tone, then immediately present the treat near their nose.
🐾Leverage the FOMO Effect:
Make your pet think you found something better so they lose interest in their stolen prize.Spring up quickly, make an excited noise, and pretend to find something amazing elsewhere. The fear of missing out (FOMO) often startles them into dropping the worthless item to come see what you are doing.
