This week our amazing veterinary nursing and reception team saved a distressed mother duck and her 10 ducklings from the road and even a drain, returning them safely to the brook. The poor mother had been disturbed by building work in her normal habitat and had wandered out on to Cat Hill. By some miracle our wonderful nursing team and some very helpful members of the public, managed to gather up the ducklings and coax mum back to safety! Well done team! Luckily we didn't ruffle too many feathers or leave mum with a big BILL to pay! 😂🦆🦆

Let's talk bladder stones! These two gorgeous girls, Lucky and Larica, presented in the same week with discomfort when urinating. Ultrasound and radiography revealed bladder stones, which required surgical removal. Both cats are doing well on their new urinary diets aimed at preventing further stone formation and dissolving urinary crystals.

PINEAPPLE 🍍🍍
What a gorgeous Silkie and she is certainly happy to be sporting her new shoes! Poor Pineapple had been struggling with pododermatitis, aka bumblefoot. This is where painful pressure sores occur on the feet and can lead to infection, including in the bones of the foot.
This year has been particularly difficult due to the cold, wet weather. Pineapple had custom built foam shoes fitted regularly, with antibiotics and pain relief to help her feet recover. She's thankfully doing much better.

Check out little Nala's journey...! This gorgeous kitten presented with vomiting and diarrhoea and was very unwell. Em identified an intestinal intussusception on ultrasound - check out the image! This is where the small intestine telescopes on itself, leading to obstruction and can be fatal if not surgically repaired. Em removed the affected part of the small intestine and Nala bounced back but a few weeks later developed a stricture (narrowing) of the area, which Em then repaired. She has made an excellent recovery and is back to causing kitten chaos! 😻

Say hi to Steve! Like many cats, he is a keen grass-eater. Although grass a natural source of fibre, it can sometimes get stuck in the most awkward of places! Steve presented gagging and retching and after some light sedation, this huge grass blade was retrieved from behind his soft palate (in the back of his throat and nose). Imagine the relief! This is a very common presentation for vets in practice and a quick fix. Steve is back to his happy self.

Say hello to gorgeous Butter! Her owner was concerned after reading about Retrievers being more prone to splenic masses and asked for a routine check. A conscious scan revealed an abnormal finding so Emete performed a more thorough abdominal ultrasound that showed a small splenic lesion that will need to be closely monitored. Whilst she was under sedation, we found that she had chipped her canine and the nerve was exposed, so this was then extracted under general anaesthesia.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our much loved Uri, the practice Uromastyx. Sadly over the last few weeks Uri developed a skin infection and pneumonia and after receiving intensive treatment from our team, sadly passed away. Many owners knew Uri after spending over 15 years as our beloved pet. He would enjoy watching an array of animals in the consulting room and would always spring into action at the site of a dandelion flower. He will be greatly missed by us all. RIP little guy ❤️

Let's talk about rabbit vaccines. Many rabbit owners are unaware of the importance of vaccination for ALL rabbits, including those living indoors.
We vaccinate against myxomatosis and two forms of viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD). These diseases are spread by direct contact with infected rabbits, fleas and midges, or even fomites (particles in the environment). This means that you can go for a walk in the park, come home, and transmit disease to your pet rabbit via shoes and clothing. At the practice we have sadly diagnosed many sudden rabbit deaths via post mortem virology sampling. Please get your rabbit vaccinated with both the combined and new VHD vaccine. Contact us if you have any questions. Keep your bunnies safe! 🐇

Say hello to our new vet! Dr Oliver Morris BVMedSci BVM BVS MRCVS

Ollie qualified from the University of Nottingham in December 2024, and joined the practice 4 days after graduating! Born and raised in Barnet, he attended the same school as Ralph, and did a work placement with us 7 years ago, followed by many more, throughout his veterinary degree. Ollie has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery and ultrasonography. He loves all animals but has a special spot in his heart for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and labrador retrievers. He plans on getting two puppies named Rick and Ronnie. Ollies' hobbies include meeting up with friends, supporting Tottenham Hotspur, playing for a local football team in Barnet and watching movies!
