☀️ Hot Weather Protocol ☀️

With the warmer weather finally here, I wanted to share a quick reminder about the Monty’s Mates Hot Weather Protocol to ensure all our furry friends stay safe and comfortable!

Our Temperature Limit: Walks will be paused if temperatures hit 25°C or higher. We also closely monitor humidity, cloud cover, and each dog's specific age and health.

Morning Cut-off: If the forecast predicts 25°C+ during our morning slots, regular walks will not go ahead.

Drop-in Care Alternative: Don't worry, your pup won't be lonely! I will still be available for drop-in visits. I'll pop by to give them some company, a quick toilet break, and plenty of indoor mental stimulation with enriching toys.

Thank you so much for your understanding and ongoing support in keeping our dogs safe and cool this summer! 🐾

All walks for today are now cancelled due to extreme heat. I will message and update everyone every day this week to make arrangements for earlier walks. Thank you for your corporation.

🚨HEATSTROKE KILLS DOGS🚨

It doesn’t always have to be ‘hot’ for an animal to develop heatstroke. Exercising excessively in warm weather, or being left in a warm or humid environment that is poorly ventilated can cause animals to quickly overheat. Extra attention should be given to large dogs, flat faced breeds, puppies, overweight dogs, older dogs, black coated dogs and dogs with emotional behaviour difficulties as studies have shown they can be affected by the heat more than others. Avoidance is always best, but it’s important to know the signs of heatstroke so that you can treat your dog appropriately and know when to seek veterinary attention should they be unfortunate enough to suffer from it.

If you are concerned that your pet is overheating, you should act immediately, as heatstroke can rapidly become a life-threatening emergency; We recommend to “cool first, transport second” as the immediate first aid response for dogs with heatstroke. Owners should also seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Dogs can sometimes find it difficult to cope with hot weather as they struggle to regulate their temperature which means they are more at risk of heatstroke than we are.

Heatstroke can be very serious! As a dog’s internal temperature rises it can cause damage to their organs and could lead to organ failure. According to AnimalTrust, 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to the vets with heatstroke are fatal.

During warm summer days it’s easy for your house to warm up. Some dogs may be able to cope with this rise in temperature, while others may struggle.

On hot days remember to:
• Ensure your dog always has access to drinking water
• Add ice cubes to your dog’s water bowls
• Use freezable dog toys and let them chew on it
• Put down damp towels for your dog to lie on (Never over the dog)
• If your dog has a long or heavy coat you could keep them clipped to make them feel more comfortable
• Keep dogs out of hot conservatories
• Avoid housing your dog in direct sunlight
• Keeping your curtains and blinds closed during the day to prevent your home from warming up when it’s hottest, and then open your windows at night to help cool down your house.

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it’s vital that you immediately contact your vet while also trying to cool them down. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life.

Research found that in the UK, although 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to vets with heatstroke die, 98% that are seen early with mild signs are likely to survive.

☀️DONT RISK YOUR DOGS LIFE☀️
Know the signs, start cooling, call a vet

Signs of heatstroke can progress very quickly. It only takes a 2°C rise in body temperature for heatstroke to kick in. Once in heatstroke, your dog can suffer from brain damage or even death in 15 minutes!

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately start cooling them down and call a vet for further advice. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life. Research has found that in the UK, 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to vets with heatstroke don’t survive, although 98% that are seen early with mild signs are likely to recover.

Keep your dogs safe in hot weather!

Just look at those ears flopping, tongues flying, and legs churning. Nothing beats the pure, joyful chaos of a dog mid-zoomie.
