Well done everyone who attended yesterday’s recall workshop, here are the notes from our session....
* Why is my dog not coming back?
Is your dog finding the equipment used aversive? Is your dog too expecting the walk to be over or fun to stop? Are your dogs hormones taking over? Are your dogs breed instincts taking over? Has you Dog got a reason to come to you?
* Treats - Use a plain meat or if your dog is toy orientated a special toy and be generous!
Taylor’s in Attleborough sells some very appealing treats, some with the hair still attached!!!
* Be exciting for your dog! Call your dog over, give them a treat or have a game and let them go again! Scatter games can be great for this.
* Play the game where you throw a treat behind your dog, let them get it, then call them over, when they come right up to you throw the treat again. Once they have got the hang of it, throw it further. This is a great game to play in new environments.
* Stay work - Great for distance control. Remember to build it up gradually and always return to your dog, rather than call them off it as they may start to anticipate moving.
* Eye Contact - Practice getting eye contact around distractions. If your dog is finding it hard move further away.
Recall takes a lot of practice to build up. Remember you know your dog best and don’t let your dog off before you feel they are ready.
