Aqua Treadmill

Water treadmills are particularly useful for conditioning horses. Akai et al (2004), explains that viscosity of water is approximately eight hundred times greater than air, hence more effort is required from the equine to overcome water resistance. Consequently, muscular strength, motor control and joint stability are improved by the increased muscle activation. Water provides buoyancy and assists the horse in vertical lifting of the limbs, but creates resistance to movement of the limbs in the sagittal plane (King et al., 2013). This is beneficial for to help lengthen both the protraction and retraction phases in the forelimb and hindlimb, in addition to reinforcing straightness in movement and strengthening musculature.
