This little whirlwind, is an original Cockerpoo crew member! An A1 since day 1!
When I collect him, he can’t get in the van quick enough! 😂 💨💨💨
Many spaniel/poodle mixes can become over-aroused (have you met my Nim?!🫣) especially around toys and water, so rather than removing the things they enjoy, or encouraging them to practice less desirable habits, we break them up with some impulse control and scent work. After taking a moment to listen and settle, he gets to use his nose to search for hidden treats amongst the rocks.
Some really common injuries in Cockerpoo’s are CCL tears, luxating patella and iliopsoas strains, so we also want to avoid repetitive jumping for toys, turning at speed or bouncing up on hind legs, which can increase the risk of these.
Giving them a scenting task provides a positive outlet for energy, helps regulate emotions, and keeps their mind engaged without tipping into frustration or over-arousal.
The best part? It’s not just good management, it’s INCREDIBLY fulfilling!
His mix of breeds was designed to use their nose to flush and hunt, so a few minutes of searching is every bit as rewarding and much healthier (physically and mentally) than a game of fetch. 🐾
I recommend scentwork all the time for every breed, but if you have a Cockerpoo or similar mix, find out about scentwork classes in your area! They’ll love you forever! 🥰🤗
