Today’s spotlight: “Martha, My Dear” by The Beatles

This spotlight despite sounding like a love song, was actually inspired by Paul McCartney's beloved Old English Sheepdog, Martha. For years, many fans assumed the song was about Paul's then-girlfriend, but McCartney later revealed that both the title and the affectionate inspiration behind the song began with his cherished dog. While McCartney has said the lyrics can be interpreted more broadly, he has always maintained that Martha was the original inspiration.

While I haven't had the pleasure of caring for an Old English Sheepdog yet, the handsome Vizsla in this photo is one of my lovely clients 🥰.

Today’s spotlight: “Sleep in the heat” by PUP.

This Spotlight explores the theme of grief through one of PUP's most emotional songs. Although many listeners first assumed it was about the loss of a romantic partner, the song was actually written by lead singer Stefan Babcock after the death of his pet chameleon, Norman. It serves as a reminder that love isn't limited by species - whether they're furry, feathered, or scaly, our pets are family, and their loss can be just as heartbreaking.

I haven't had the opportunity to care for a chameleon yet, but the bearded dragon featured in this photo takes me back to my college days - I snapped this picture back then! 😁

It’s a whimsical song that imagines what it might be like if we could understand each other and share our stories across species.
