Interesting ultrasound scan on an ex thoroughbred racer with an old tendon injury this week. The horse had shown a sudden lameness on the same leg so we ultrasound scanned to assess for a new injury. The ultrasound machine is able to demonstrate blood flow within tendon defects- if there is blood flow then we know the injury is acute and the body is responding by bringing in blood to the injured area. The Doppler image shows the bloods flow as blue and red areas within the lesions

Lots of lovely horses over the last couple of weeks. Presenting with a wide range of issues but being able to assess, scan or x-ray, diagnose and then treat as required and most importantly implementing a treatment plan or rehabilitation protocol is often the key and the last piece of the puzzle to getting the best out of any treatment for your horse

A Pain in the neck! Osteoarthritis in the neck known as the cervical facet joints can cause significant pain. Signs can vary but often include neck muscle stiffness, performance and behavioural issues as well as forelimb lameness. Diagnosis often involves x-rays or a CT scan to fully assess the joints. Treatment is a collaborative approach to reduce the pain and inflammation with joint medication or anti-inflammatory’s followed by rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The ultrasound scan pictures in this case show the facet joint between the 5th and 6th vertebrae. The joint is scanned whilst the horse is sedated and then medicated using the ultrasound to guide the needle precisely into the joint space. The medication is accurate and minimally invasive.

A great time of year to look at our performance and plans for this season …….I had a really great session with focusing on my performance on Murphy, the mechanical horse . Definitely worth a session if you haven’t been on him. Not all performance issues are horse related, I discovered that my issues with left canter are due to an unevenness in my seat bones!

Happy New Year 🥳 Bring on the year of the horse! First ride of 2026 done 😆

Small swellings can sometimes hide bigger things. This horse presented with lameness and a subtle swelling to the outside of his hindleg with a very small scratch visible on his skin. On x-ray there are multiple fractures to his lateral splint bone as a result of a kick sustained whilst in the field. Image 4 shows the soft tissue swelling evident on the X-ray and image 5 shows the two separate fractures sites.
Splint bone fractures are not always straight forward to treat especially if there is a wound associated with it, however this horse was lucky and so far is doing really well
