No one talks about how lonely it feels when your dog struggles.

The cancelled walks.
The avoiding people.
The knot in your stomach when you see another dog coming.

You’re not failing.
You’re not alone.
And you’re not the only one crying in the car after a difficult outing.

There is help.
There is hope.
And you’re doing better than you think.

So many dogs are called “naughty”…
when they’re actually frightened.
Barking at visitors, freezing on walks, lunging, hiding, trembling — these aren’t acts of disobedience.
These are cries for safety from dogs who don’t have the words to say, “I’m scared… please help me.”

My new blog shares a gentle, story-led look at what fear really feels like for our dogs, and why understanding it changes everything — for them and for us.

If your dog struggles with new people, new places, or sudden changes, this one is for you.

💗 When Your Bitch Comes into Season 💗

If your girl is unspayed, you’ll know her season can be a messy, emotional, and sometimes confusing time — but with the right care, it doesn’t have to be stressful.

A season usually lasts around 3 weeks, and every bitch is different — I’ve even known one successfully mate at day 8, so it’s best to assume fertility for the full cycle.

A few gentle tips to make life easier:
🐾 Keep her on-lead and avoid walking straight from home to prevent scent trails.
🐾 Wash bedding often and gently clean her “girlie bits”.
🐾 Expect some spotting — protect carpets or use doggy nappies if needed.
🐾 Use pet-safe odour neutralisers or anti-mating sprays to help with scent.
🐾 If she seems sad or clingy afterwards, keep her busy with fun training and walks — quiet isolation only makes her feel worse.

A little calm understanding and routine go a long way to keeping your girl — and your home — comfortable during her cycle.

Let’s keep our dogs – and others – safe

Sadly, we’re hearing of more and more incidents involving dogs in public spaces. If you ever witness, experience, or are concerned about a dog being dangerously out of control, it’s so important to report it.

This isn’t about blame – it’s about safety, awareness, and giving dogs the best chance to be understood and helped before things get worse.

The law is there to protect both people and dogs, and by reporting incidents, you’re helping to prevent future harm and encouraging responsible ownership.

👉 You can report incidents to your local police station or environmental health officer at your local council or learn more about the law here:

Please share this post to help spread awareness. One report could make a real difference. 💛

You can be fined if your dog is out of control in public - find out about Dog Control Orders, banned dogs, dog fouling and reporting a dangerous dog

I want your dog to be the envy of your friends!

During the current crisis I am here to support you and your dog, my services have moved to online help either one to one or small groups, all of which are proving very successful! Zoom is the app I am using, humans and dogs are even more relaxed than if I am physically present, learning for both parties ensures great progress!

This is dog training with a difference! My name is Avril Munson and I am The Dog Calmer! I offer training and behaviour advice for all pet owners, from puppy through to adult, either in one to one sessions or small group classes.

My goal is to help you communicate effectively with your dog to ensure you have a dog that is a pleasure to take anywhere with you, a dog that everyone else wants to take home! At the same time to make you feel confident, sure of yourself and able to control your dog in all situations.

My training is different because Group training is in small friendly super supportive groups running in 6 week courses, 7 courses in all that will take you from puppy through to a well trained adult dog. I want to support you in having the maximum fun with your dog!
