As the wheel of the year turns toward Samhain - the ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter - the veil between worlds was said to grow thin.
In Celtic mythology, dogs often appeared as guardians of thresholds - guiding souls between worlds or protecting homes as spirits roamed. The hound was seen as a sacred animal, connected to both the physical and spiritual realms.
Herbs played a part too:
🌿 Mugwort and juniper were burned to cleanse the home and ward off wandering spirits.
🌼 Rosemary was used for remembrance - honouring loved ones and loyal animals who had passed.
It’s a beautiful reminder that this season isn’t just about endings, but about honouring the bonds that last beyond time - including those with our beloved dogs.
So tonight, light a candle, burn a sprig of rosemary, and give your dog an extra cuddle - for love remembered and loyalty that never fades.
Keep it herby,
Andrea🌿
