How can someone hurt such a beautiful and harmless creature?
That’s the question I often asked myself when I discovered the dog abuse and state regulation on mass culls in Tunisia and in North Africa.
This is a deeply painful and important question. There’s no simple answer, but several psychological, cultural, and environmental factors can contribute to why some humans hurt animals—even in brutal ways like sh33ting dogs.
In some places, animals—especially stray dogs—are not seen as companions, but as pests, threats, or nuisances. If a person grows up in a society where dogs are commonly poisoned, sh3t, or otherwise disposed of, they may become emotionally desensitized. K3lling a dog might feel no different to them than swatting an insect.
I remember when I was a kid visiting Tunisia, I was told to get in the car as soon as I left my aunties and uncles places because stray dogs were chasing us while driving. I was genuinely scared and everyone would tell me to throw rocks at them if they came closer. It was about survival rather than anything.
Tunisia doesn’t vaccinate its dogs nor the human against rabies, which means both species are scared of each other. What happens when you are DEEPLY scared of something that’s alive?
➡️ Well, often you try to get rid of it.
It is going to take a long way for Tunisia to change, and in the meantime there are still young people like and .rahmouni trying to help when they saw this little hurt puppy.
If those people weren’t there, all hope would die and common abject violence perpetuates in the face of apathy.
