Poor Genie Pod… 🤍🐾

It took a while before she realised that she could actually move her head and put her little face down while wearing her ‘lampshade’ cone 🙈

Thankfully, we go back to the vets this morning to have her stitches removed.

The little ‘baddy’ on her tummy is healing nicely ❤️‍🩹

Genie pod is still recovering this week after being sterilised on Monday.

It was hard to see her beautiful light fade, and watch her being so sick and shutdown for two days. Our hearts broke a little, and we all felt that low energy in the house. The tail that never usually stops wagging, stopped as she rested on the grass outside, only coming in at night.

By Wednesday morning, her light started to flicker back on, and she took her first meal of the week. Her sweet white tipped tail took its first wag and we knew that she was coming back to us, albeit slowly.

She’s still not at 100%, but she’s getting there 🤍🐾

When Melina was spayed, I don’t remember her being as sick as Genie was, so it was new territory for us.

If I’m completely honest, it wasn’t an easy decision for me. I was torn, but I knew it was the responsible thing to do with so many already unwanted dogs out there.

As her mum, though, I just wanted to protect her 🤍

My Beanie Pod has always been an endearing oddball with some of his quirky behaviour.

His ‘new’ thing is to bury his long snout as close to Genie Pod’s bum as possible.

For him, her smell in his safety! 🙈🤍🐾

Each time I leave the house with Genie’s brothers (Bear & Beanie), this little Podenca girl makes the sweetest tiny howl calling them back (this time encouraged by Alfie!)

Podencos are incredibly devoted to their family. It’s one of the many things I love about them. Their loyalty, their sensitivity, and their deep connection to their pack never stops amazing me.

Considering my little Pods are from Andalusia in Spain, they’re not great lovers of the heat. 🇪🇸🐕🐕🥵

They spend most of the day inside in front of a fan while it’s really hot outside.

Little Bear, on the other hand, is out all day but sleeps in the shade. He’s from Greece 🇬🇷 another warm country. Maybe it’s because his coat is really thin… and he’s able to cope with the heat better?

Whereas poor Beanie has quite a thick coat, which is moulting everywhere at the moment 🤯🙈

I love how different they are, their quirks, preferences, and little personalities ❤️

They make me smile every day. I can’t imagine a day without them 🐾🤍

When someone you’ve never met paints your dogs… ❤️

I opened Instagram yesterday to discover that Hope for Podencos had shared this beautiful painting of Beanie and Genie.

The artist has somehow captured exactly what I see every day, the gentleness in Beanie, the mischief in Genie, and the bond they’ve built together after such difficult beginnings.

These two have changed my life, and they became the inspiration behind my book, Two Peas in a Pod, a book I wrote to introduce more people to Spain’s forgotten hunting dogs and to help raise awareness for rescues like Hope for Podencos.
