Excessive thirst and urine production in parrots.
It could be a sign of Diabetes (Polyuria), Viral infection Fungal infection or Malnutrition. In rare cases due to heart disease. Other important cause that is ignored is Psychogenic disease - it is a condition in which mental stress causes physical symptoms matching other diseases. It is possible that some of the parrots maybe very sensitive to Toxicoses found in the synthetic colouring agent in their feed.

AFRICAN GREY PARROT APPROXIMATE AGE BY EYE COLOR
Examine the bird's eye color. An African Grey parrot 6 months old or younger usually has dark gray or black eyes. After the age of 6 months, their eyes steadily lighten, becoming light gray around the age of 1 year. By 18 months to 2 years, the eye color becomes a very pale yellow brown, and by the age of 3 to 4, African Greys have light yellow eyes. Once the eyes have turned yellow, it's harder to identify the bird's age.

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT GOVERN THE INCUBATION PERIOD. 🤔 (post dated 17/09/2017)

What is the principle factor that governs the length of incubation of eggs in birds?

Does the incubation period depend on the size of the bird or the size of the egg?

If the above is true it is understood that Finches egg hatch in 12 – 14 days. Macaw in 26 – 28 days. Ostrich in 42 – 44 days.

If the above statement is true then for example why do Vasa parrots eggs hatch in 14 – 16 days. When compared to the small parakeet like Budgerigar, which takes 18 – 21 days.

The second example would be that both Vasa Parrot and African Grey Parrot weigh weight almost the same between 450 – 500 grams. Vasa parrot eggs hatch in 14 – 16 days and African grey parrot’s egg hatch in 28 – 30 days.

Aviva Vishnia, Mam can you please throw some light on the size and weight of Vasa parrot egg. Incubation temperature and required weight loss for the egg. Thank you.

Reply :
Sadiq Bhaimia, pleased to hear from you, hoping all is well at your end...
The question you are raising is quiet puzzling - the Vasa is indeed the size of African Grey and yet its incubation period is less than 20 days, 17-18 in avarage...Since we never had the chance to incubate this species and I myself never seen one in Israel, it is hard to give a simple reply. We need to take in consideration all environmental conditions in Madagascar, where the Vasa originally comes from, how many years the Vasa lives and so on. This is something I don't mind to check in the professional literature.

As for the temperature in the Incubator and the Lose of Weight Procedure, we have been incubating Finches eggs in the past. We used the same temperature - 37.3-37.5 Degrees Celsius, which is the average natural incubating temperature and we didn't change this temperature along the whole period. We also used the same percentage of Weight Lose of 15%+-2 so it is possible...since the Vasa egg is bigger, it is definitely much easier. The RH ( relative humidity) is the only factor that must be adjusted according to the Weight Lose. The egg turning, the 3ed crucial factor of incubation, is also done automatically.

Although you may already be aware, some may not know that chilies are extremely beneficial for your birds! Each one has vitamins, helps with residual pain and helps keep worms under control. You should try to feed one each day. They may not like them initially so perhaps introduce a piece at a time. Don't forget to wash your hands - lol. Info taken from Parrot First Aid. It was their post that reminded me that you might not know this fact.

Broken or Cut blood feather. How to handle the situation.
Hobbyist should be prepared to face situation like broken blood shaft / cut blood shaft / feather. Any feathers anywhere on the body will have a blood supply inside the shaft. The blood nourishes the feather while they grow; as the feathers mature the blood dries out. So it is very important that a hobbyist knows how to handle the situation. In case such a situation arises.
The new feathers that have blood in the shaft are called Pin feathers. This Pin feathers need lot of blood supply to to grow. Once they are fully grown the blood supply dies out. If during this period the feather is broken or cut the bird will bleed profusely and may even bleed to death if the bleeding is not stopped.
Feathers grow from the follicle in the skin of the bird. The feather is nourished by an artery and vein that extend up into it from the follicle. The newly growing pin feather can be identified the the color it will look dark in color as it is filled with blood, whereas the shaft of an older feather will be white.
The old feathers are continues replaced and heavily replaced during the molting period. Blood feathers appear during this period, They can be damaged during this period due to various reasons.
A hemostat and cotton are an essential part of the first aid kit. If you trim your bird's wings, examine each feather closely before cutting, so as to avoid cutting blood feather accidentally.
Sometimes a blood feather may break due to an accident or be accidentally cut causing it to bleed. A broken or accidentally cut blood feather is not life threatening, if promptly attended too and appropriate steps are taken.
It is always advisable to remove the damaged feather, as it is bound to bleed again and again due to recurring injury.
Once the damaged feather is removed the bleeding will stop and a new feather will grow, sometimes the bird maybe suffering from a disease which could affect its clotting for example a liver disease. This could lead to huge blood loss and death.
This is what you have to do in case you face with such a situation.
1. Catch the bird, in such a way that it is comfortable in your grip.
2. Use Flour, Corn starch or Hemostat powder over the broken feather and apply pressure. This will help the blood to clot.
3. If the attempt to stop bleeding fails. The feather has to be removed. It is best done by a Veterinarian. If there is no Veterinarian around get in touch with an experienced hobbyist in your area. Who might be able to help you.
4. Two persons are required to go this procedure, one to hold the bird and another to pull the feather.
5. The damaged feather should be gripped firmly close to the root and pulled out with a single firm jerk. Hold the bird firmly during this procedure.
6. Bleeding will stop after completing this procedure successfully. In case there is bleeding from the follicle due to follicle damage after the feather has been removed, Pressure should be applied till the bleeding stops.
7. In case of something going wrong during the procedure or the bird looks very weak due to blood loss the bird should be taken to a veterinarian immediately.

Birds respiratory system
Birds have an extensive respiratory tract with a large surface area. It even extends into some of the long bones such as the humerus in the wing and femur in the leg. This makes them particularly sensitive to airborne fumes and smoke. Remove birds from premises for at least 7 days to spray chemicals or when painting or laying carpeting. Avoid fumes from:

1. cigarette smoke
2. dryer fabric softener sheets
3. scented detergents
4. carpet fresheners
5. window cleaners and other household cleaning products
6. perfumes and colognes
7. scented candles
8. new paint
9. fireplace smoke
10. termite fumigation
11. art supplies (fixatives, pigments)
12. aerosol sprays of any type
13. hairspray
14. cleaning solutions
15. new carpeting
16. air fresheners
