Antonio Nores Martínez: el sueño blanco de Córdoba
Antonio Nores Martinez was born in Cordoba in 1907, in a big and special family: they were nine brothers.
• Antonio, doctor and creator of the Argentine Dogo.
• Agustín, lawyer, politician and international diffuser of the race.
• Enrique, journalist, professor and ambassador, director for almost thirty years of the newspaper Los Principios.
• Rogelio, Isabel, Alejandro, Jose Luis, Teresa and Francisco, less known, but fundamental part of that fertile environment where science, culture and passion lived together.
He grew up among books, discipline and curiosity, and in that environment a dream was born that would forever change the history of cineophilia. He was a brilliant doctor, head of service in important hospitals in Cordoba. But behind the white robe beat another heart: that of a passionate hunter, observant and visionary. Looked at the dogs and wondered why neither of them met all the necessary qualities. Hence your reflection:
Why not create a dog that has everything we need and, at the same time, represents us as Argentinians? ”
Their project wasn't aesthetic, it was functional. It said :
Beauty should be the result of usefulness, never the other way around. ”
He took notes, observed each litter, eliminated flaws and enhanced virtues. With scientific rigor he applied his doctor mentality to dog selection. In 1947, Antonio presented himself at the Buenos Aires Hunters Club showing the fruit of years of work: the Argentine Dogo. A strong and harmonious white dog, bred for large hunting but also able to live with man. On that occasion he stated:
"I have created this dog for our land: strong to face prey, but faithful and gentle with man." ”
That day not only a standard was born: the white soul of Argentina was born.
In 1956, during a hunt, Antonio tragically lost his life at just 49 years old. But his dream didn't die with him.
His brother Agustín took over: he preserved the best specimens, founded clubs, spread the race and obtained official recognitions. In 1964 came the one of the Argentine Kennel Federation and in 1973 the one of the FCI, which consecrated the Dogo as the first and only recognized Argentine breed in the world. In parallel, Enrique, with his work as a journalist and ambassador, gave prestige to the surname Nores Martinez, indirectly strengthening the dissemination of the Dogo. The other siblings, less visible, were part of that same familiar climate that made the project possible.
Today, every Argentinian Dogo who runs free or rests with a family carries with him the vision of Antonio, the tenacity of Agustin, the voice of Enrique and the silent support of the other brothers.
The Dogo isn’t just a breed: it’s a family history, a scientific insight, and a national legacy.
It is the white dog that even today embodies the words of its creator:
“Courage, nobility, and docility: that is the spirit you should embody. ”
Thank you, Antonio, for dreaming when it seemed impossible. Thank you for believing that a dog could be much more than a hunting companion: it could be a reflection of the land, courage and nobility of a people. Your life was short, but your work was immense. With your doctor's hands and your visionary's heart, you shaped a living being that today unites families, accompanies paths and carries the pride of Argentina beyond borders. Every Argentinian Dogo that breathes, runs, protects and loves is a spark of your soul that keeps burning. And as long as there is a Dogo in the world, your name will never be blotted out.
