Minulý víkend se uskutečnila odborná akce Stomatologický podzim, zaměřená na nové poznatky, rozšiřování vědomostí a vzájemné sdílení zkušeností mezi veterinárními stomatology. Stejně jako v předchozích letech nechyběl ani MVDr. Juraj Hanzel, MRCVS, který tentokrát obohatil posluchače přednáškou na téma zubních kazů. 🦷

Last weekend, the professional event Stomatological Autumn took place, focusing on sharing new insights, expanding knowledge, and fostering the exchange of experience among veterinary dentists. As in previous years, MVDr. Juraj Hanzel, MRCVS, was also in attendance, this time enriching the audience with a lecture on dental caries. 🦷

Akutní fraktury zubů u zvířat vyžadují okamžitou pozornost! 🦷 Pokud se neléčí včas, může dojít k bolestivému zánětu nebo infekci. Fraktury vzniklé do 48 hodin lze řešit vitální amputací pulpy (VPT), zákrok, který zub udrží živý a funkční.

Acute tooth fractures in animals require immediate attention! 🦷 If left untreated, they can lead to painful inflammation or infection. Fractures that occur within 48 hours can be treated with vital pulp therapy (VPT), which preserves the tooth’s vitality and functionality.

Bohužel ne každý zub se dá zachránit. Tento pejsek u nás musel podstoupit extrakci řezáku v horní čelisti kvůli zlomenině po nárazu do jiného psa.

Na intraorálním RTG snímku je patrná jemná lomná linie pod úrovní alveolární kosti. Korunka zubu byla nadměrně pohyblivá, což potvrdilo závažnost poranění.

V tomto případě endodontické ošetření nebylo možné – jedinou vhodnou volbou byla extrakce, aby pejsek netrpěl bolestí a předešlo se dalším komplikacím.

Unfortunately, not every tooth can be saved.
This dog had to undergo extraction of an upper incisor due to a fracture sustained after colliding with another dog.

An intraoral radiograph revealed a fine fracture line located below the level of the alveolar bone. The crown of the tooth was abnormally mobile, further confirming the severity of the injury.

In this case, endodontic treatment was not a viable option—the only appropriate course of action was extraction, to prevent pain and avoid further complications.

🦷 Změna barvy zubu? Nepodceňujte ji!

📊 Až 92,2 % zabarvených zubů je neživých – poškozených ireverzibilní pulpitidou a následnou nekrózou dřeně.
➡️ Proto doporučujeme: každý zabarvený zub by měl být endodonticky ošetřen nebo extrahován.

V tomto případě došlo ke změně barvy špičáku – zub byl již mrtvý.

🦷 Tooth discoloration? Don’t ignore it!

📊 Up to 92.2% of discolored teeth are non-vital – damaged by irreversible pulpitis followed by pulp necrosis.
➡️ That’s why we recommend: every discolored tooth should be either endodontically treated or extracted.

In this case, the canine tooth had changed color – and was already non-vital.

I když jde o poměrně vzácný nález, jako referenční stomatologické pracoviště se s ním setkáváme poměrně často.

Although this finding is relatively rare, as a referral dental clinic we encounter it quite often.

🦷 Každodenní chléb veterinárního stomatologa – zlomené zuby.
Na fotce vidíte typickou frakturu (zlomeninu) zubu P4 po okusu parůžků. A znovu apelujeme na majitele a chovatele psů:

‼️ Nekupujte svým parťákům parůžky ani himálajské tyčinky.
Psi si na nich lámou strategicky důležité zuby – a zlomenina opravdu bolí.

👉 Místo toho věnujte svůj čas a energii tomu, abyste psa naučili čistit si zuby zubním kartáčkem.
To nejlepší, co můžete pro jeho chrup udělat, je každodenní mechanická očista zubů.
Nezapomeňte, že zanedbané zuby nejsou jen esteticky nevzhledné, ale především poškozují celkové zdraví vašeho psa!

🪥 Prevence je jednodušší a rozhodně levnější než řešení následků.

A pokud si říkáte, jak často zuby čistit, odpověď je jednoduchá: každý den.
Zkuste si sami čistit zuby jen jednou týdně… a pak se zeptejte někoho, jestli si toho všiml. Věřte, že si všimne. 😉

🦷 A day in the life of a veterinary dentist – fractured teeth.
This photo shows a typical fracture of the fourth premolar (P4), caused by chewing on antlers.
Once again, we’re urging all dog owners and breeders:

‼️ Please don’t give your dogs antlers or Himalayan chews.
These ultra-hard treats often lead to broken, strategically important teeth – and make no mistake, fractures are painful.

👉 Instead, invest your time and energy into teaching your dog to accept tooth brushing.
The best thing you can do for their dental health is daily mechanical cleaning with a toothbrush.

Don’t forget: neglected teeth aren’t just unsightly – they directly damage your dog’s overall health.

🪥 Prevention is simpler and definitely cheaper than dealing with the consequences.

And if you’re wondering how often to brush your dog’s teeth, the answer is simple: every single day.
Try brushing your own teeth just once a week… then ask someone close to you if they noticed.
Trust us – they will. 😉

Zubní kaz před a po ošetření!

Zubní kaz nebo bakteriální infekce zubů jsou běžné u lidí, méně časté u psů a u koček se prakticky nevyskytují. Uvádí se, že méně než 10 % všech stomatologických problémů souvisí se zubním kazem. Může to souviset s tím, že lidské sliny mají kyselejší pH, lidské zuby mají mnoho rýh a prohlubní a naše strava je bohatá na sacharidy – především cukry.
Navíc kariogenní (kazotvorné) bakterie se v ústech psů a koček vyskytují méně často než u lidí.

Počátečním stadiem kazu je kyselá demineralizace zubní skloviny. Ta vzniká působením kariogenních bakterií, které fermentují cukry a tím uvolňují kyseliny na povrchu zubu.
U psů se kaz obvykle vyskytuje na žvýkacích plochách stoliček (molárů), tedy zadních zubů. Vzhledem i konzistencí připomíná kaz u lidí – jedná se o měkkou, hnědou až černou lézi.

Tooth decay: before and after treatment!

Dental caries and bacterial tooth infections are common in humans, less frequent in dogs, and virtually nonexistent in cats. It is estimated that less than 10% of all dental problems in animals are related to cavities. This may be due to several factors: human saliva tends to be more acidic, human teeth have more pits and fissures, and the human diet is rich in carbohydrates—especially sugars.
Additionally, cariogenic (cavity-causing) bacteria are less prevalent in the mouths of dogs and cats compared to humans.

The initial stage of tooth decay is acid-induced demineralization of the enamel. This occurs when cariogenic bacteria ferment sugars, releasing acids that attack the tooth surface.
In dogs, cavities typically occur on the occlusal (chewing) surfaces of the molars—the large teeth at the back. These lesions appear brown to black and have a soft texture, much like those seen in humans.

🦷 I tohle je veterinární stomatologie...
Ne vždy se nám podaří zoubek zachránit. Někdy je poškození natolik rozsáhlé, že jedinou možností zůstává extrakce – tedy vytržení zubu.

Na naší klinice přistupujeme k tomuto kroku opravdu až jako k poslednímu řešení. Vždy se nejprve snažíme zuby zachovat a hledáme cesty, jak je opravit.

Tento pejsek přišel o zub při hře se svým čtyřnohým kamarádem. Bohužel poškození bylo tak závažné, že oprava nebyla možná. A ani u druhého pejska se zoubek nepodařilo zachránit – i v jeho případě jsme museli přistoupit k extrakci.

🦷 This is veterinary dentistry too…
Unfortunately, we’re not always able to save the tooth. Sometimes, the damage is so severe that the only remaining option is extraction – the removal of the tooth.

At our clinic, extraction is always a last resort. We do everything we can to preserve the tooth and explore all possible treatment options first.

This little dog lost a tooth while playing with a canine friend. Sadly, the damage was too extensive to repair. And in the case of the other dog, the tooth couldn’t be saved either – extraction was necessary there as well.

Víkendy sice nejsou pro nás pracovní… ale fraktury zubů si kalendář opravdu nevedou.
I proto jsme dnes, mimo běžnou ordinační dobu, ošetřili pacienta s frakturou zubu P4 vpravo nahoře (maxilla).

Přestože jsou aktuální termíny na plánované výkony obsazené na více než měsíc dopředu, existují situace, kdy jednoduše nelze čekat. Přistoupili jsme proto k okamžitému endodontickému ošetření, které bylo provedeno v inhalační anestezii, s využitím lupových brýlí a nejmodernějších postupů v rámci veterinární stomatologie.

Plánovaná péče má svůj harmonogram. Akutní případy si ho ale často určují samy.

Weekends may not be our regular working hours… but fractured teeth don’t exactly check the calendar.
That’s why today, outside of our standard clinic hours, we treated a patient with a fracture of the upper right P4 (maxilla).

Although our schedule for planned procedures is currently booked more than a month in advance, some situations simply can’t wait. We proceeded with immediate endodontic treatment, performed under inhalation anesthesia, using magnifying loupes and the most advanced techniques in veterinary dentistry.

Planned care follows a schedule. Acute cases often make their own.

Představujeme nový projekt z dílny HANIMA.

Rozhodli jsme se pustit do nového projektu, který navazuje na dlouholetou specializaci MVDr. Juraje Hanzela, MRCVS, ve veterinární stomatologii.
🦷 Vzniká HANIMA Veterinary Dentistry – prostor věnovaný výhradně zdraví zubů a dutiny ústní u malých zvířat.

MVDr. Juraj Hanzel, MRCVS, se specializuje na záchovnou a preventivní stomatologii, ortodoncii a orální a maxilofaciální chirurgii. Poskytuje také odborné stomatologické konzultace.
Je členem RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), CVDS (Czech Veterinary Dental Society), EVDS (The European Veterinary Dental Society) a ČAVLMZ – stomatologické sekce. Aktuálně pokračuje ve specializovaném vzdělávání v Lucembursku v rámci certifikačního programu ESAVS (The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Veterinary Dentistry), který jej po dokončení kvalifikuje jako certifikovaného odborníka v této oblasti.

Cenné odborné zkušenosti získával nejen v České republice, ale také v Anglii, USA a Africe.

Tato nová stránka přinese odborné informace, edukační obsah, pohledy do praxe i zákulisí stomatologických zákroků.

Současně pracujeme na větším projektu, který vyžaduje čas a pečlivou přípravu. O všech dalších krocích vás budeme průběžně informovat. Máte se na co těšit. ✌️

Introducing a new project by HANIMA.

We are excited to launch a new initiative that builds on the extensive expertise of MVDr. Juraj Hanzel, MRCVS, in the field of veterinary dentistry.
🦷 Welcome to HANIMA Veterinary Dentistry – a dedicated space focused solely on the oral and dental health of small animals.

MVDr. Juraj Hanzel, MRCVS, specializes in preventive and restorative dentistry, orthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. He also provides advanced dental consultations.
He is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the Czech Veterinary Dental Society (CVDS), the European Veterinary Dental Society (EVDS), and the dentistry section of the Czech Association of Small Animal Veterinarians (ČAVLMZ).
Currently, he is pursuing further specialization through the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Veterinary Dentistry (ESAVS) in Luxembourg – a program that will formally qualify him as a certified veterinary dental specialist upon completion.

He has gained extensive clinical experience in the UK, the USA, Africa, and the Czech Republic.

This new platform will offer professional insights, educational content, behind-the-scenes glimpses of dental procedures, and much more.

We are also working on a larger project, which requires time and careful preparation. We’ll share more details soon – and trust us, there’s a lot to look forward to. ✌️
