• Betta fish (Betta splendens) go through distinct life stages, each with visible physical and behavioral changes driven by growth, genetics, and environment.
• Stage 1 — Baby Fry (Day 1–7):
Newly hatched Betta fry are extremely small (~0.2–0.4 cm), nearly transparent, and rely on their yolk sac for nutrition. They remain weak swimmers and often stay near the surface or attached to bubble nests. At this stage, organs are still developing and survival depends heavily on stable water conditions.
• Stage 2 — Early Development (Day 8–28):
The fry begin free swimming and require microscopic live foods such as infusoria and baby brine shrimp. Fin rays start forming, body length increases, and slight pigmentation begins to appear. Growth during this phase is rapid, and proper feeding directly affects future size and fin quality.
• Stage 3 — Juvenile / Young Betta (1–3 Months):
At this stage, Bettas develop recognizable fin types (Halfmoon, Plakat, Crowntail, etc.). Colors intensify due to active pigment cells and iridescent layers. Males begin showing early territorial behavior, including slight flaring. The fish becomes stronger, more active, and visually vibrant.
• Stage 4 — Adult Betta (3–12 Months):
This is the peak stage where Bettas display full coloration, maximum fin spread, and breeding readiness. Proper diet, warm water (25–28°C), and clean conditions enhance their beauty and lifespan. This is also the most visually striking phase of a Betta’s life.
• Stage 5 — Aging Betta (1.5–3+ Years):
As Bettas age, their colors may fade, fins can become less smooth or slightly torn, and activity levels decrease. Metabolism slows down, and they require more stable care with low stress. Despite aging, a well-maintained Betta can remain active and healthy for years.
• Key Growth Factors:
Water quality, temperature stability, high-protein nutrition, and low stress are the most important factors influencing Betta development.
• Lifespan Insight:
With proper care, Betta fish typically live 2–4 years, though some individuals can exceed this range under ideal conditions.
