It’s Not Just About the Diameter: The "Hidden" Dimension of Bird Ringing
Most bird breeders spend hours debating the correct Internal Diameter (ID) for their leg bands. But there is a second measurement that is just as vital for bird welfare, yet rarely discussed: Ring Height.
I recently saw a discussion noting that while most Parrots max out at a 6.0mm height, Mynas can comfortably wear a 9.0mm height. As a bird breeding expert, I can tell you: this isn't just a preference—it’s biology.
🦴 The Anatomy of the Leg
The reason for this discrepancy lies in the tarsus (the lower leg bone).
Parrots (The Climbers): Parrots have relatively short, stocky tarsi. They use their feet like hands to scale branches and cage bars. If a ring is too "tall," it acts like a splint, locking the ankle and foot joints together. This leads to restricted movement, pressure sores, and even permanent joint damage. For most Psittacines, 4.0mm to 6.0mm is the "Goldilocks" zone.
Mynas & Starlings (The Hoppers): Softbills like Mynas have much longer, more slender "shanks." Because they have more vertical space between their joints, they can safely accommodate a taller ring (8.0mm - 9.0mm). A taller ring on a Myna also makes identification easier from a distance—a major plus for aviary management!
⚠️ The Risks of Getting it Wrong
Choosing a ring that is too high for the species can lead to:
Joint Locking: Preventing the bird from naturally tucking its leg while sleeping.
Snagging: A tall, loose ring is more likely to tilt and catch on nesting material or wire mesh.
Debris Traps: In softbills, rings that are too high can trap fruit pulp or droppings against the skin, leading to infections.
📏 The Expert Rule of Thumb
Never let a leg band cover more than 50-60% of the total distance between the bird's "ankle" and its foot.
Whether you are a hobbyist or a commercial breeder, checking both dimensions of your bands is a small step that makes a massive difference in the long-term mobility and health of your birds.
