I picked up anonymous brand lightning charging cable at a gas station on a road trip recently. The lightning connector on this cable actually gets quite hot when I use it to charge my phone. I CT scanned it and an Apple-brand lightning connector to see what the differences were.
The off-brand cable (left) actually contains a conventional PCB with several surface-mounted components. You can follow the PCB traces back from the power pin, through the vias, to a three-pin component that looks like it could be a SOT23-3 package. MOSFET? Voltage regulator? Any ideas what might be getting hot and why? Happy to post more screenshots of the circuit if anybody thinks they know what might be happening here.
The Apple brand connector contains much more serious engineering. Not only is the fundamental construction different, but it contains a much more sophisticated PCB and has really carefully-engineered strain relief. You can see that there’s an IC mounted on the BGA-- this is probably the C94 chip that supports fast charging lets Apple devices know the cable is MFI (made for ipod/iphone) certified.
