These adorable puppies were part of an accidental litter and consequently, surrendered to an overcrowded municipal shelter in Georgia. Their mom was a labradoodle and dad was a German shorthaired pointer. They clearly took after their father, but a couple have a few hints of a curl in their coats!

While these puppies are incredibly cute and have amazing temperaments, their fate was uncertain before we took them into our care here at Animal Haven. They were originally surrendered to a shelter that is forced to euthanize for space when at capacity. While puppies are usually lower on the list for such terrible outcomes, the harsh reality is that they are not exempt. Let's face it, these puppies ended up in the shelter system because their owners did not get their own animals spayed and neutered.

Overpopulation is not just a local issue, and shelters across the country are stretched beyond capacity. It is not caused by one thing, but many factors that are all interconnected. Lack of spay neuter, lack of accessible vet care, lack of funding, lack of education, lack of legislation, lack of enforcement of existing legislation - the list goes on and on. Shelters are in a crisis like never before. Something needs to change, or even puppies like these will continue to have uncertain futures.

But these pups are some of the lucky ones and they are safe at Animal Haven. And by taking them, it means another dog is safe because their kennel is now available.

Bree, Gabrielle, Susan, Lynette, and Pool Boy are 2 months old and available for adoption at Animal Haven. Visit them during our adoption hours:
Tuesday-Friday: 1-7pm
Sunday: 12-4pm

Ernest is ADOPTED! 🥳

This sweet senior was originally found as a stray in Miami Dade country, Florida. He had a horrible skin condition that left him with patchy fur and painful, inflamed skin. While he began to recover in the Miami shelter, it wasn’t until he arrived to Animal Haven that he truly blossomed. A pep returned to his step, his coat grew back thick and healthy, and his goofy personality shone through. We were THRILLED when his new family met and fell in love with him—and they couldn’t wait to share the sweetest update with us! 🥰

“Ernie is settling in well and enjoying having grass and long walks :) he even led us to a hiking trail in our neighborhood park and dipped his toes in the creek. Adventurous boy! Also happy to be home and on the deck. He’s a sweetheart!” 💜

Welcome to the final frontier of cuteness…our Star Trek pups! 🧑‍🚀

Uhuru, Janice, Spock, Christine, and Kirk (not pictured) just touched down from space…err, Georgia! These little ones had a long journey from an overcrowded municipal shelter, and now they’re settling in at Animal Haven. 🐶

We don’t know anything about mom or dad, but suspect these pups have some shepherd in them. We’re not sure what size they’ll be when full grown, but we do know they’re going to be CUTE!

At 2 months old, these puppies are blank slates! It’s up to you to teach them all their basics, from sit and stay to potty training. Are you up for the voyage of puppyhood? Adopt one of these spacefarers at Animal Haven! 💜

Meet them during our adoption hours: 1–7pm Tuesday through Friday and 12–4pm on Sunday. Saturdays by appointment.

has reached critical capacity and has surpassed 1,000 animals in their care. They have suspended intake and rescue partners like Animal Haven are have stepped up for diverted placements for animals that need to be rehomed.

Although we too are overcapacity, over the weekend we took in Dunkin, a 4-year-old Golden Doodle who needed placement. His previous owner was moving to a home that did not allow pets, so they sadly needed to find a new family for him. The friend had been holding on to him while trying to find a solution for the dog.

Dunkin is 63lbs, very outgoing, dog friendly and basically just a big ol’ goof. He’s a very excitable boy, so he’d do great with an active family. Dunkin is in desperate need of a groom, and Animal Haven has scheduled a sedated shave down for him. But we’re sure he’ll be feeling much better later this week.

Come visit Dunkin during Animal Haven’s adoption hours to meet him! 💜

Chaplin is the quintessential Dachshund: dapper, clever, and loooooong. 😍 This sweet senior is looking for a home—won’t you come meet him?

Chaplin’s story is sadly one we’re familiar with: After nearly 12 years in a home, Chaplin’s family was no longer able to keep him. 💔In his kennel, he’s reserved but sweet—accepting gentle pets before his walks. We’re sure he’s confused, but we know there’s a family out there who will cherish him during his golden years, as he deserves.

As a senior dog, Chaplin has a few medical issues our team is investigating. We know he has a heart murmur, and he seems to have some eye issues that should clear up with medication. Our team will let interested adopters know more about his health as soon as we have more information. Will you open your heart to Chaplin? 🐶

Meet Chaplin at Animal Haven during our adoption hours: 1–7pm Tuesday through Friday and 12–4pm on Sunday. Saturdays by appointment. 💜

Yesterday, we received a call from a Good Samaritan who had found an abandoned senior cat in a stroller. 💔

Unable to take the cat themselves, they reportedly reached out to over 10 other rescues, and the story was the same everywhere: all were either at capacity or simply unable to help.

One of our staff members happened to be in the area on their day off and went over to assess the situation. Upon arrival, the staff member found the cat in a stroller with the heartbreaking note above.

Although we, too, are at capacity, we simply could not just leave her on a busy Midtown street in the stroller. Staff brought her back to Animal Haven, popped up a crate, and let her settle. Now, Pumpkin is safe - although understandably confused - and we hope she will find a new home soon. 💜

It’s clear that Pumpkin was loved. We are heartbroken for her, but also heartbroken for her person who, facing homelessness, must have felt they had no other option but to leave Pumpkin with this handwritten plea for help. Shelters are not just overcrowded, but reaching record levels of overcapacity. We are in a crisis.

Sadly, Pumpkin’s story plays out every single day here in New York City and across the US. Shelters and rescues need your help more than ever. Adopt, foster, or donate to your local shelter or rescue. Encourage people to spay and neuter their pets. Share the stories of shelter animals in need. Advocate for animal welfare policies and enforcement. We are approaching a tipping point, and something must change.

If you’re interested in adopting Pumpkin, please stop by Animal Haven to meet her. We would love to give her the happy ending she deserves. 🐱

And the best sploot award goes to… BIG BOY 🐶

Big Boy came to Animal Haven through our community engagement program. Due to some negative experiences in his previous home, it took time to earn Big Boy’s trust. But once he let you into his circle, it was clear you were a buddy for life—and in time, Big Boy became a staff favorite. ❤️

While it took a bit of time for Big Boy to find his match, we’re happy to share that his person adores this sweet, chonky boy as much as we do! She even gave his name an adorable and fitting twist: Big Beau 🥰

“Big Beau is doing amazing! We just moved to a new apartment with a nice backyard garden that is only an avenue away from Central Park. He’s getting lots of walks in for his weight loss journey!”

RORY IS ADOPTED! 🥳

We’re so excited to share that after a year and a half at Animal Haven, Rory has found her people. 😭😍 In fact, she was such a great little foster dog that her foster parents decided they couldn’t imagine life without her, and made things official! 🥰

Rory’s journey began in an overcrowded municipal shelter in Miami. When Rory was rescued, she was unable to fully extend or bear weight on one of her front legs. After X-rays, it was found that Rory was likely suffering from severe nerve damage. When little Rory arrived at Animal Haven, our team was determined to explore every option to give her the most comfortable life possible—from physical therapy to specialized treatments. Ultimately, our veterinary and rehabilitation team found no improvement in the leg and determined that amputation would give Rory the best chance at a normal, healthy life. Rory healed well but was often overlooked at the shelter, until one of our volunteers took a chance on her. As you can see, it was simply meant be! ☺️🐶

Now, Rory goes on hikes in her very own backpack, has songs written about her, and is the best friend to her new parents. 💜 Congrats, Rory!

We have the BEST news…Skips is home! 😍

Skips was one of 7 dogs that were living in an apartment in The Bronx. The owners were quickly overwhelmed and reached out for help after their unaltered dogs had two back-to-back litters of puppies. Our team took in 5 dogs from the home—which they had never left during their short lives. Skips was the last to be adopted, as he struggled a bit with trusting new people. His adopter took a chance on him, and they’re now best buds! He shared, “Skips has grown leaps and bounds and continues to grow every day. We bonded instantly and he’s slowly but surely opening up to other dogs and people.” 🐶

We’re so happy for Skips and all our other adopted animals. Share your with us via DM or at [email protected] 💜

BETSIE IS ADOPTED! 🎉🐶

Our sweet girl is settling into her new home and we couldn’t be happier!

When Betsie first arrived at Animal Haven, she was severely matted, dangerously underweight, and needed a partial tail amputation due to the neglect she suffered. But through it all, she stayed sweet, wiggly, and full of love - and now, she’s starting her brand new life with an amazing family!

She’s been settling in great with her new floofy brother and has been a little shadow to her new mom. We simply could not have asked for a better ending to such a tragic story. Betsie gets to romp in her new yard with her brother, roll around in the grass, and live a pain-free life.

To her incredible new family: thank you for giving Betsie the second chance she so deeply deserved. And to our Animal Haven community who helped her on her journey, you made this happy ending possible.

Go live your best life, Betsie. We love you! 💜
