🎄 Why Puppies Should Not Be Christmas Presents 🐾
A puppy is not a surprise.
A puppy is not a decoration.
And a puppy is not a seasonal gift.
At Christmas, emotions run high - excitement, generosity, good intentions. Unfortunately, this is exactly when puppies are most often purchased for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way.
Here’s why puppies should never be bought as Christmas presents:
🎁 Puppies Are a 10–15 Year Commitment (or more)
The wrapping paper comes off in minutes.
The responsibility lasts a lifetime.
🐶 Christmas Is Chaotic
Noise, visitors, travel, disrupted routines - this is one of the worst environments for a young puppy who needs predictability, sleep, and gentle learning.
⏰ Puppies Need Time - Not Holidays
House training, sleep routines, social learning, and bonding can’t be rushed or squeezed between events. When time is limited, stress and behaviour problems follow.
💔 Surprise Puppies Remove Choice
Breed, temperament, lifestyle fit, and timing matter. Taking away informed choice increases the risk of regret, rehoming, or surrender to rescue.
🚨 Christmas Fuels Unethical Breeding
Demand spikes in December. Puppy farms and backyard breeders thrive. Ethical breeders do not rush litters or place puppies impulsively.
🐾 Shelters Pay the Price
Every year, rescue groups see an influx of “Christmas puppies” surrendered once reality sets in.
💚 What to Do Instead
✔ Give a promise, not a puppy
✔ Gift books, training vouchers, or education
✔ Plan thoughtfully for the right time
✔ Choose ethical breeders who prioritise lifelong responsibility
At Emerald Park Border Collies, I believe puppies deserve calm beginnings, informed families, and lifelong commitment. Not impulse decisions wrapped in ribbon.
If it’s meant to be, it can wait.
Our dogs deserve better.
