Tillie's version of doom scrolling... but probably more informative

This sniffing is the absolute best thing you can do for your dogs on a walk.

It releases endorphins, and 5 minutes of sniffing has the same positive effect as 39 minutes of offleash running, without building the stamina

Next time you wonder why your dog won't settle, are you building stamina or are you building calm?

Choose calm behaviors, get calm dogs.

Behind the Rescue: Why We Have an Age Guideline for Puppies
One of the hardest parts of running a rescue solo is setting boundaries that protect both our dogs and our community, even when those boundaries cause disappointment.
I often get asked why I don't adopt puppies to homes where the caretakers are over 65. It isn't a policy born out of judgment or a lack of appreciation for senior adopters. In fact, senior homes are often some of the most loving, dedicated, and patient environments a dog could ever ask for.
Instead, this policy is born out of the heartbreaking realities we witness on the front lines of rescue every single day.
The images attached to this post are real messages and real situations from families who found themselves in impossible positions .

The Reality of the Puppy Equation
A ten-week-old puppy is a 10-to-15-year commitment. A high-energy, large-breed puppy requires intense physical management, obedience training, and a level of stamina that can challenge a person at any stage of life.
When a well-meaning family member gifts a puppy or an irresponsible breeder sells a high-drive dog without a second thought the long-term biological mismatch can quickly become dangerous. An energetic dog that pulls on the leash can lead to devastating falls ( Unexpected life transitions—like a sudden illness, mounting medical bills, or moving into assisted living frequently force heartbreaking surrenders.
The grief in these messages is palpable No one wants to say goodbye to a dog they love because their physical circumstances or health changed

Finding the Right Puzzle Piece

As a person who matches dogs/pups to families, my job is to set every adoption up for permanent, lifelong success. Preventing a mismatch isn't about discriminating against age; it's about honoring the biological reality of the dog and safeguarding the well-being of the adopter.
I absolutely love our senior adopters, but my goal will always be matchmaking based on the specific lifestyle, size, and energy level that ensures a peaceful, safe, and joyful partnership for the rest of the dog's life.
Thank you to everyone who understands the heavy weight behind these decisions, and to the families who trust rescues to pick up the pieces when life changes directions

We also can't be in camp "dogs are family" and expect a 83byear old to make the sacrifices needed to stay in their home because they have a dog.

"She didn't fail the challenge. She outsmarted it."

I set up a little challenge on the trail: climb up on the rock pile for a treat.
But if you watch the video, Tillir decided she wasn't entirely sold on the climbing part. Instead of giving up—and instead of blindly forcing her way up onto an unstable surface—she used her brain. She figured out the exact angle, stretch, and leverage required to keep her paws safely on terra firma while still successfully pocketing the reward.
In traditional dog training, some might look at this and say she "failed" or disobeyed the cue.
As a positive reinforcement trainer, I look at this and see a masterclass in canine problem-solving.
I love watching dogs think. When we stop micromanaging every single paw placement and allow our dogs the freedom to choice-train, they show us how clever they actually are. Tillie evaluated the risk, assessed her comfort level, and negotiated a workaround that kept her safe and well-fed.
That's not defiance; it's critical thinking.
Training shouldn't just be about blind compliance. It should be a conversation where your dog is allowed to say, "I'm not super comfortable with that specific setup, but look what I can do instead."
The next time your dog hesitates or finds a creative loophole to a task you've asked for, take a second to look at it from their perspective. They might just be outsmarting the system.
Does your dog blindly follow instructions, or do they also like to invent their own creative loop-holes? 👇

"It looks like a silly photo. It’s actually a full conversation."

Look closely at that tongue flipped up over the side of Tilly’s muzzle.
To the casual observer, it’s just a goofy, scruffy dog mid-lick while we take a selfie on a dirt road. But as a dog trainer, I see something entirely different: a brilliant, subtle conversation.
That tongue flick is a calming signal.
Right before I snapped the tongue photo, I tilted my head directly into Tillie's personal space. In dog language, a direct, looming approach can feel intense. Tillie didn't panic, growl, or snap—she simply used her vocabulary. By flicking her tongue up like that, she was saying, "Hey, you're a bit close. Please slow down and ease up."
Because I listen to the dogs, I respected her request.
The moment I began to straighten my head and pull my pressure back, her posture shifted. As you'll see in the very next photo of this series, the moment I gave her that micro-second of breathing room, she instantly chose to move into my space on her own terms.
Dogs are speaking to us constantly. They use their eyes, their ears, their posture, and yes—even the exact direction of their tongue. We just have to be willing to slow down enough to read the subtitles.
Next time you lean in to kiss your dog's head or take a quick photo, watch their muzzle. Are they telling you a joke, or are they asking for a little bit of grace?
Drop a 🐾 if you love learning to read hidden dog language!

Remember Hopscotch from the Peek-a-Bu litter? 🥹
Her family sent me this update on her (now named Marley!) and I just had to share. Look at that face! She is 4 months old, 15 lbs, and absolutely thriving.
But the part that made me do a happy dance? Her family said she settled right into her crate on her very first night because of the foundation work we did here before she left.
When you’re flying solo running a shelter, the late nights, the constant cleaning, and the endless crate training repetitions can wear you right down. But getting a message like this? Hearing that a puppy transitioned seamlessly and felt safe and secure right out of the gate? This is exactly why I do what I do.
Happy life, sweet Marley girl. You are making me so proud! ❤️

I love taking the dogs out to these beautiful, serene trails. I tell myself it’s for the fresh air, the gorgeous forest canopy, and the peaceful connection with nature.
Then we hit the trail, and reality sets in.
Swipe to see what actually held Tillie's absolute undivided attention for a solid four minutes. It’s a rock. Just a giant, ordinary boulder that probably had a highly controversial message left on it by a red squirrel three days ago.
Forget the expensive, fancy puzzle toys. If you want to deeply enrich your dog’s life today, just find a giant rock on a gravel road and let them read the local morning newspaper.

What’s the weirdest, most ordinary thing your dog has ever stopped to aggressively stare at or sniff on a walk?
