Worried about winter colic? The threat of colic is real in winter months, especially for those in climates that vary from extremes. Both mental and physical stressors common in winter months can compromise normal digestive function.

Join 2 equine nutrition professionals for an upcoming webinar where we discuss how to keep your horse happy and healthy by promoting enrichment opportunities, supporting gut motility, and keeping it fun AND practical, yet effective.

Whether you're in Colorado with Connie (independent equine nutrition advisor, ENA) or wintering with Isabelle (independent equine nutritionist, MSc, PAS, BBRM EQM) up north in Canada, or somewhere in-between, this session will have meaningful, science-based tips for supporting every horse this winter!

This is a FREE virtual event - please register for the Google Meets session here:
Wednesday, November 18 · 7:00 – 8:00pm Eastern time

You've seen it thrown around when discussing food and health. The spooky "P" word: Processing. 👻 👀 😱

In human nutrition this term has been linked to products related in obesity and cancer risk, however, processing takes on an entirely different meaning when it comes to horse nutrition.

Processing is an umbrella term for various physical, chemical, and thermal actions that modify the raw product; processing can include technologies such as extrusion, rolling, steaming, and pelleting. Many grains, such as corn, oats, and barley, need to be processed to be digestible and beneficial to the horse, otherwise they may develop hindgut acidosis and colic.

Byproducts, the remnants of processing for other industries, can also provide us with beneficial feedstuffs such as beet pulp. What you may initially think are "fillers" or low-quality ingredients are actually strategic byproducts that are accessible to the horse's unique digestive system and assist in reducing food waste.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving 🧡

10/08/2026

Thanksgiving is here and Halloween is right around the corner; for many of us it is the season of indulgence. 😋 It may be tempting to share the harvest with your horse but there are a few things to be mindful of:

🛑 Not all foods are safe to share. Avocado, tomato, eggplant, broccoli (and it's relatives), various onions, bread, chocolate and milk-containing products are some examples of generally unsafe snacks to feed to horses.

❤️‍🩹 Your horse's health status may dictate the amount and type of treats that are appropriate. Metabolically impaired horses can be sensitive to sugars so take care in choosing something appropriate for your horse.

❓ New foods can cause disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract, specifically with hindgut microbial populations. Introduce any new food slowly and in small amounts.

Wishing everyone a safe and bountiful holiday weekend! 🦃

One of the rare mornings where my office actually gets used as an office and not as an extension of the playroom 😅

I've got a couple busy weeks ahead with finalizing repeat client consults, new client visits, and getting myself and my mare prepped for the WSDAC Canadian National Championship.

The horses are fresh, the coffee is warm, and it's a good day to have a good day 😊
