What is an NSC and what does it do?

An NSC is a non- structural carbohydrate. These are starches and sugars that are broken down in the intestines and stored as glycogen. These glycogen are ready to provide energy to the equine athlete during performance or during their recovery.

Finding the right NSC level for your horse is a very important step in determining their feed. Too much NSC can cause metabolic issues, where as too little can make the recovery period for the athlete more challenging.

If your horse has a history of metabolic issues the best option would be a feed with a lower NSC to help reduce these issues.
