Please consider adopting a pet this holiday season. This is Valentin…this is his tragic story. Valentin was living with his 3 siblings in Mexico. He and his siblings were tied to a building to “guard” the property. One night the building caught fire and because the dogs were tied, they couldn’t run away. 2 of Valentin’s siblings died and Valentin and his brother were severely injured. Valentin still wears the tragic scars from his past. Anne-Marie and her husband worked with a Canadian agency called Fetch + Releash who helps get dogs adopted from Mexico. They didn’t know his whole background until several months after adopting him, but they knew he had been in a fire. The pictures they had been given of him were heartbreaking. Anne-Marie and her husband picked up Valentin on February 15, 2022 from the Toronto airport. There were so many things he had never experienced before, like living in a house, walking on a leash through a neighbourhood, other people or dogs, city streets, city traffic etc. he was amazing with their family but was reactive to things outside the house (dogs, cars, people). He was also reactive to other people coming their home, lunging at them at times. They took Valentin to training with an agency that helped build his confidence when out walking but he was still very reactive to guests. They took him to dog trainer, Karen Laws, and had several private lessons with her. Karen recently took Valentin onto CP24 because she felt his transformation was incredible. Anne-Marie and her family can now have guests come over and he is so much better on walks. He’s even met a few dogs around the neighbourhood with whom he gets along. Fast forward to October 2024 when I had the privilege of meeting Valentin through the “Rover” app. He stayed with me for 4 days while his parents were out of town. They told me about his past and cautioned me about the potential for reactivity. Valentin showed NO reactivity at all, met new dog friends, met new people friends, did not react to the horses, and ran around like a puppy. I photographed Valentin while he was with me.
