Let’s meet the Standard poodle! Although many people associate the poodle with France/ or French aristocratic culture the poodle’s origins come from Germany where the breed was developed as a waterfowl retriever and many still excel at hunting and retrieving. Poodles come in 3 separate sizes and each are recognized as their own breed toy poodles are up to 10 inches at the shoulder, miniature poodles are over 10 inches but under 15 inches at the shoulder and the standard is over 15 inches at the shoulder, in North America right now the moyen poodle isn’t recognized and is usually placed as an oversized miniature but more commonly as a small standard. The poodle is also where the “puppy cut/trim” comes from since it is the show trim for a poodle under a year old!

Many people ask “how often should I get my dog groomed?” The generally accepted answer is every 8 weeks! Although depending on your dogs coat maintenance/ coat type a more or less frequent schedule may apply. Did you know that the saying “dogs shed two times a year” is based on the spring and fall equinoxes, however if your dog has a coat that sheds you already know they actually shed year round it’s just a little more at these two times of the year! Happy St Patrick’s Day! On today’s Meet the breeds let me introduce the Glen of Imaal terrier! This hardy compact terrier was developed/ bred to help keep their family’s property/free of pests and predators like rodents and badgers. Their compact size and rough wire coat makes them ideal for life in the rocky cliffs and valleys of Ireland.

Meet the breeds! This is the xoloitzcuintli or xolo for short pronounced “sho -low- its- quintli” or “show -low”. They are the national dog of Mexico! They are also an ancient primitive breed that developed naturally, in other words they weren’t bred/developed by people to do a specific job like most other breeds in existence today. The history of the breed goes back to Aztec and Mayan civilizations/ cultures where they were revered as healers and guides to the after life. They come in both coated ( hairy) and hairless varieties where the hairless version is dominant and most commonly seen and the skin has more of a hide like feel and appearance to help protect them from the desert like climate of Mexico. They also come in 3 sizes the toy, miniature and standard they are also a very intelligent breed and will easily outsmart an inexperienced owner.
