We have a few days of just Minnie and Shadow before the summer rush. So I’m working on some things with Shadow which starts with breakfast.
Shadow loves his food and that is a great time to associate reward with training.
At only 5 months, he has learned to bark on command, sit, walk next to me on a leash, wait to go out the front door for a walk, walk away from a situation when I say No and as you can see, he will sit and wait for his food until allowed. We are super proud of his progress!

Today’s walk was a little chilly. Been raining most of the day and now the bugs are out.
Top Tip: Get some vet approved bug repellent for days like this. Do not use any human products especially if they contain DEET

Fun fact: mosquitoes are surprisingly attracted to dogs by body heat, movement, and even the carbon dioxide dogs exhale after running around — so an excited puppy can basically become a tiny flying-bug magnet on a humid evening.

Today’s guest is Rubi. A Peruvian hairless dog.
This is a first for us here at Colin’s K9 Care. Hairless dogs are rare, especially in Canada because of the cold.

Some fun facts:
The Peruvian Hairless Dog is one of the oldest dog breeds in the Americas — some historians believe it dates back more than 1,000 years to pre-Incan civilizations in Peru. Ancient pottery and artwork from cultures like the Moche and Chancay often show these distinctive hairless dogs curled up beside people.

Some interesting facts about them:

* They’re also called the “Peruvian Inca Orchid,” even though the breed existed before the Inca Empire.

* Their lack of fur makes their skin feel warm to the touch, which led to a long-standing myth that they could help with aches and arthritis when used like a living heating pad.

* Not all puppies in a litter are hairless — some are born coated with fur because the hairless gene is naturally linked to a coated version.

* They often have missing premolar teeth, which is genetically connected to the hairless trait.

* Because they have little or no fur, they can sunburn easily and may need sunscreen or shirts in strong sun.

* They tend to be very loyal and “velcro-like” with their family, often choosing one favorite person.

* In Peru, they’re considered part of the nation’s cultural heritage and are protected by law. Some historic sites and museums even keep them on the grounds as living cultural symbols.

They also come in three sizes — small, medium, and large — which is pretty unusual for an ancient breed.

This is Shadow at 5 months playing with 2 labradoodles, Piper and Cleo who are 10 months old. Their energy is never ending and I ended up having to deal with playtime at 03:30 and 06:00 🤦

Puppy fun fact: at 3 AM, many puppies get a sudden burst of energy because their sleep cycles are much shorter than adult dogs. After a nap, they can wake up feeling fully recharged and ready for “zoomies,” wrestling, and toy attacks — even while the rest of the house is wondering what tiny tornado got unleashed. Early-morning play is also part of how puppies build coordination, confidence, and social skills with other dogs. 🐶🌙

Today started off with some breakfast and a regular walk in the neighbourhood. Walking several dogs at once is not for the feint hearted especially if you have several large dogs, a puppy and you meet other dogs on the walk.

Walking multiple dogs at once is actually great mental enrichment for dogs — they naturally learn to mirror each other’s pace, sniffing habits, and even confidence levels. Calm dogs can help nervous dogs feel safer, and energetic dogs often burn more energy because they’re constantly reading the “pack” dynamics during the walk. 🐕🐕🐕

Caution: even well-behaved dogs can suddenly create a dangerous “chain reaction.” If one dog lunges at a squirrel, bike, rabbit, or another dog, the others often instinctively follow before you can react. Multiple leashes can also tangle around legs in seconds, increasing the risk of falls, pulled shoulders, or escaped dogs. Using shorter traffic handles, keeping dogs paired by size/energy level, and practicing loose-leash walking individually first makes group walks much safer.
