Did you know in cree (nēhiyawēwin), the word for dog is atim (ah-tim), and the word for horse is mistatim (mis-ta-tim)—literally translating to "big dog"?
When horses were first introduced to the Plains, they were seen as powerful, hardworking companions, much like the dogs that already helped move camps. This led to the name mistatim (mista = big, atim = dog).
