Hands up, everyone who thinks they are a better jumper than Winter.

Thank you for your participation. We are sorry to inform you that none of you are better jumpers than Winter.

Winter is an umbrella cockatoo, available for adoption to a qualified home. You can easily tell when Winter is happy. When she’s happy, she will jump, make noises like a choo-choo train, and sometimes move her head in a Figure 8 pattern.

Hands up, everyone who thinks they can make better choo-choo train noises than Winter.

Thank you for your participation, but we don’t want to inform you about too much bad news in one day.

If you’re interested in adopting, please do your research, and make sure you understand the demands of having birds in your family and being part of your life 24/7 for many decades.

We've been keeping a secret from you but it's time to let the cat, oops bird out of the bag!

About two months ago we received an application from a family to adopt, they had recently lost their Moluccan and were devastated and said the house was too quiet.

They came to meet the birds and well, to our huge surprise, they chose not one but THREE babies to provide a wonderful home for!

Fuzzy, Arwen and sweet Annabelle are enjoying the good life with their new family. And the house will never be quiet again!

Cliff and Norm spend some time supervising from the aviary. It’s just like when they are supervising any other time, but from the aviary. Cliff and Norm bring their special brand of mischief wherever they go.

Cliff and Norm are best-buddy gofffins cockatoos, available for adoption together to a qualified home.

If you’re interested in adopting, please do your research, and make sure you understand the demands of having birds in your family and being part of your life 24/7 for many decades.

As part of the care we provide to the birds while they wait for their forever home, we keep an eye on them and get any potential health issues checked out and/or addressed by avian healthcare professionals. We weigh the birds, inspect their p**p, watch their behaviour, and even smell them. We take note of anything on their cage bottoms or on the floor, that shouldn’t be there or is unusual.

One of the birds that always looks forward to their comprehensive dental exam is Bob. Bob always has all of his paperwork thoroughly filled out before his appointment. Bob is very good at opening wide, moving his tongue out of the way, and he really does his best to breathe through his nose, so that he doesn’t fog up our dental equipment.

Due to Bob’s excellent oral hygiene practices, and through incredible willpower his ability to limit snacking on sweets, he never has any cavities. In fact, Bob has been a member of our Cavity-Free Club since its inception! Bob really has a high dental IQ and it’s a pleasure to help him maintain his winning smile. Part of the reason for Bob’s motivation to maintain his dental health must be the scratches he gets as a reward for good results on his recall exam.

Bob is a moluccan cockatoo who not only has a dazzling smile, but also impeccably-styled hair, who is available for adoption to a qualified home that flosses regularly.

Rescue is NOT Retail and here’s why that matters

One of the biggest misconceptions we face in animal rescue, whether it’s parrots, cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, ferrets, or reptiles is the idea that we operate like a store-type business.

We don’t.
And we can’t.

Here's why rescue doesn’t (and shouldn’t) follow a retail model and why we ask for patience, compassion, and partnership instead of consumer convenience:
🔸 We don’t sell animals.
We are guardians, ambassadors, advocates, rehabilitators, and matchmakers. Our focus is on welfare, not inventory turnover. Each life matters deeply and uniquely.
🔸 We don’t work “normal” hours.
Rescue often means 3 a.m. gavage feedings, receiving late night ICU kids, vet transports that take all day, and emergencies, not full-time availability to answer non-urgent questions about an animal’s adoption status. We're not being rude, we're triaging lives, cleaning enclosures, doing feedings, answering emails (usually “late”), doing fundraising, preparing educational materials, etc.
🔸 There are no guarantees or even “forever” homes.
Unlike buying a product with a receipt and return policy, adopting is a long-term commitment based on relationships of trust and education, not transactions. Things can and do go wrong, and we need to be here to help with that, too.
🔸 We are mission-driven, not profit-driven.
Every decision, from who adopts to how and when, is made in the best interest of the animal, not to “make a sale.”
🔸 We have limited resources.
Space, time, medical care, and trained foster/volunteer help are finite. This means waitlists, evaluations, and sometimes hard decisions.
🔸 We don’t operate on demand.
We can’t create animals to suit preferences. We work with those who need help, and what they’ve survived, often trauma, neglect, injury, medical issues, to mourning and loss of their families.
🔸 Our work continues after adoption.
Education, support, and community are part of the commitment. We don’t just "hand over the animal" and move on.
🔸 We advocate for the voiceless.
Which means sometimes, we say “no.” Not to offend but to protect.

We had an awesome time at the Ladner Village Market yesterday. It was hot, and we were grateful we had shade under our tent, and we cooled the birds off with the spray bottles. We met lots of people, and answered lots of questions!

That’s the end of our season this year at the Market. Your next opportunity to support Greyhaven is at our lunch social, on September 14th. We hope to see you there!
