Let's talk about a common myth: The reactive dog who's "protecting" its owner.
Unless your dog has been specifically trained in personal protection, it's highly unlikely they're actually protecting you. In fact, their behavior is much more likely to be rooted in insecurity and fear. The dog is trying to create distance between itself and the thing it's afraid of—whether that's a person, another dog, or something else.
This kind of out-of-control behavior isn't noble; it's a liability. Your dog is acting aggressively because they feel overwhelmed and they don't trust you to handle the situation. By teaching your dog that you've got everything under control and building confidence in the situations that make them uncomfortable, you can help them feel secure and put an end to the unwanted reactivity.
