❄️EXERCISING YOUR DOG SAFELY IN WINTER❄️
I've had many clients asking about how long their dog should be outside this week now that the cold weather is here! I have provided below a few suggestions for keeping your canine safe.
🌬CHECK WEATHER AND TEMPERATURE PRIOR TO WALK
Check to see what the weather is like out before going for your walk. Factors such as ice, snow, wind chill, rain and puddles increase risk of injury to your dog depending on temperature.
☃️KEEP WALKS SHORT
Your walk may be 10 to 30 minutes depending on the risk factors involved for your particular dog on that day. If you are unsure whether it is safe, don't risk it and stay indoors.
🥶WATCH FOR WARNING SIGNS YOUR DOG IS UNCOMFORTABLE
Lifting paws, not wanting to go out, whining, cowering, licking feet and decreased activity are signals your dog will give you to let you know they are uncomfortable with the temperature and conditions and should be brought indoors immediately.
🧣UTILIZE WARM CLOTHING
Just like us when we go out, we bundle up! There are dozens of types and styles of clothing made for your dog to help them stay warm and better enjoy the winter weather. This may include: coats, jackets, hoodies, sweaters, hats and boots. Just because your dog has a fur coat doesn't mean they would not benefit from using clothes.
❤JUST REMEMBER
It is okay to skip walks for a couple days if it isn't safe conditions for you and your dog. There are dozens of other ways to exercise the body and mind of your dog. This can include: puzzles, toys, training, canine body conditioning or maybe your dog is small enough to use a treadmill!
Enjoy winter doing fun activities with your dog while making sure they are safe, happy and healthy!
