👁️A corneal ulcer is a painful wound on the surface of your dog’s eye — and it can worsen very quickly.

❗️These ulcers can appear out of nowhere and are often caused by things like:
-A scratch or poke from a stick
-A piece of grit or grass seed
-Eyelid or eyelash problems
-Dry eye or eye infections

🐾 Common signs of an eye ulcer include:
-Red, bloodshot eye
-Squinting or holding the eye shut
-Excessive blinking or tearing
-Rubbing at the face or pawing at the eye
-Cloudiness or a visible spot on the eye

Short-nosed breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers, and Shih Tzus are especially at risk because their eyes are more exposed.

💡 The good news? With prompt veterinary care, most ulcers heal quickly. But left untreated, they can lead to serious complications — even permanent eye damage or loss of the eye.

📞 If you notice anything unusual with your dog’s eyes - Bluewater Veterinary Emergency Clinic is here for you if needed!

🚨 Heatstroke in Dogs: Know the Risks

As summer temperatures rise, so does the risk of heatstroke in our pets. Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when a dog’s body temperature gets too high and they can’t cool down effectively. It can cause severe organ damage and, if untreated, can be fatal.

🚨 High-risk dogs include:
• Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, etc.)
• Seniors
• Overweight pets
• Dogs with thick or dark coats
• Pets with heart or breathing issues

⚠️ Signs of heatstroke:
Heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, confusion, collapse or seizures. If you notice any of these, start cooling your dog with cool (not ice-cold) water and get to a veterinary clinic immediately.

🧊 Early treatment saves lives. Intensive care, IV fluids, oxygen therapy, and medications may be needed to stabilize your pet and prevent lasting damage.

✅ Prevention tips:
• Never leave your dog in a car—even for a minute
• Avoid walks in the heat of the day
• Keep water and shade available
• Stay indoors during extreme heat

If you think your dog may have heatstroke, call your family veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian immediately. Bluewater Veterinary Emergency Clinic is here if needed!

☀️ Hot Pavement Can Burn! Keep Your Pet’s Paws Safe This Summer 🐾

A warm summer day might feel perfect for a walk, but hot pavement can be painful—and even dangerous—for your pet. Surfaces like asphalt, concrete, and artificial turf can reach scorching temperatures, leading to burned paw pads, blisters, and discomfort.

Here are some simple ways to help protect your pet’s paws:

🐾 Do the “5-Second Test” – Place your hand or bare foot on the pavement for five seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
🌳 Walk during cooler times – Stick to early mornings or late evenings when surfaces are cooler.
🌿 Choose soft or grassy paths – Grass and dirt are much gentler and cooler than pavement.
💧 Keep walks short midday – If you must go out during peak heat, keep it brief, bring water, and take frequent breaks.
🥿 Try dog booties or felt pads – These offer extra protection from hot surfaces (if your dog will tolerate them).
👀 Check paws regularly – After walks, inspect for redness, cracks, or blisters, and clean them to avoid infection.

🚨 Signs of burned paw pads: Limping, licking or chewing at feet, reluctance to walk, red or darkened pads, or visible blisters. If you see any of these, contact your veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately.

Porcupine Quills 🚨

Patient Update: Lenny

This handsome two-year-old Golden Doodle named Lenny had an unfortunate run-in with a porcupine and came to us with quills in his face. He was examined, sedated, and given pain relief so our team could safely remove the quills. Thankfully, Lenny recovered well and was one happy pup heading home! 💛

🔴A reminder for pet owners: What to Do if a Porcupine Quills Your Dog

➡️ Contact your veterinarian immediately. Quills can migrate deeper and cause serious internal damage. Never try to remove them at home.
➡️ Do NOT trim the quills. Cutting them does not make removal easier and may cause further injury.
➡️ Avoid muzzling or harnessing near quills. Pressure can drive the quills in deeper.
➡️ Follow all recovery instructions from the veterinarian including medication and rest.

Porcupine encounters are more common in the warmer months—if your pet has a run-in, we’re here to help. 🐶🩺
