Dr. Kristen Pyke is a partner here at Valley Equine Clinic, and our resident cowgirl (literally). A regular day for her can include some dental exams, some breeding work, and a lameness exam all before noon! Our "Gastroscopy Queen," Dr. Kristen is well adept to treating any performance athlete. A competitive barrel racer herself, you can catch her on the Maritimes circuit with her partner, Demi, or maybe at a local clinic as she starts her c**t, Comet.

😷Equine Herpes Virus (EHV)😷

With the EHV-1 outbreak south of the boarder, we have been getting a lot of questions about EHV, so wanted to make a post to address some frequently asked questions!

😷What's going on?
Equine Herpes Virus outbreaks are common. This outbreak made news because the outbreak occurred at a very large horse show in Texas, causing spreading of the outbreak as horses returned home. EHV can also mutate (transform) into a more serious and deadly form called EHM, which is what happened in this case.

😷Where can I get more information about EHV/EHM?
We have a fact-sheet on our website that lays out basic, factual information about this virus. You can follow this link to find it on our website!

😷Where can I get more information on this specific outbreak?
The American Association of Equine Practitioners is hosting a webinar for horse owners wanting to know more about this specific outbreak on Tuesday, November 25th at 9PM. You can follow the link here to register!
https://aaep.org/event/horse-owner-webinar-ehv-1-updates/

😷What do I need to do to protect my herd?
Horses with any contact with this outbreak should be on strict quarantine - if you are planning to have your horse near a horse that just came back from the USA, double check that it's not from an infected barn or show (the USA is very large - most places are safe!). As always, we recommend good biosecurity (don't let your horse touch other horses, don't allow people to touch your horse, don't touch other horses). As always, we also recommend vaccinating for EHV every 6 months if you are showing/exposing your horse to other horses year-round.

What are Ultrasound-Guided Injections, and why do you use them?

Equine medicine has evolved, and we're able to image and diagnose more than we ever have before! When we have to block or treat a deep structure, it's critical to know exactly where you needle is going.

By getting a proper image on the ultrasound first, our team is able to view the needle and guide it within the targeted structure! This ensures any expensive therapy or treatment is done properly, and ends up in the right place.

In this photo Dr. Chris is injecting a cervical (neck) joint that had osteoarthritis and causing a front end lameness. He uses the ultrasound to ensure its in the affected joint and not the surrounding muscle belly.

VEC is here to provide sports medicine, dentistry, integrative, gastroscopy, and emergency coverage to Nova Scotia! We offer haul-in options for clients to get seen faster and in a more affordable manner! Call us at (902) 690-5014 to get on our schedule today!

Here at Valley Equine Clinic, one of the things we are most passionate about is education - whether that's educating ourselves, our clients, or the horse community. Dr. Hansen just returned from a continuing education seminar in Ontario (sponsored by Zoetis - thank you!), where she learned about anesthetic and pain management protocols, new diagnostic modalities available, and small-business strategies to continue to make Valley Equine an awesome place to work. As usual, after one of our team-members completes any continuing education, we will follow up with a meeting so everyone is up to date! Here's to learning - keeping our practice moving forward and upward!

Shout out to our Dr. Chris White, who is currently on route back from "NL Vet Con". Dr. White was equine keynote speaker at the conference, giving two lectures to fellow veterinarians attending the conference. He spoke about lameness and imaging, then about equine emergency medicine. We are proud of Dr. White, and so glad to have his brain on the Valley Equine team!

We recently had a client ask about bone marrow aspiration, which we offer here at Valley Equine. Now that we have a few more followers than we did when we posted this video (when we first opened in February) we thought we would share again! Give us a shout if you want to talk about any of the therapies we offer, including CenTrate Bone Marrow Aspiration!

Whoops - almost forgot it was Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week! We have a wonderful RVT, Kaelee. She's our anesthesiologist, radiograph technician, gastroscopy technician, surgical assistant, dental assistant, horse handler (and often trainer), record keeper, and overall person who keeps us safe and efficient. Thank you to Kaelee for all you do! Additional fun fact - if you ever want to get Kaelee a treat, she is gluten free!
