Whether you’re training a high-energy puppy🐶 or a slow-moving senior 👴—this one tip stays the same ⏬️
🔁 Keep your Place sessions short and successful
🛌 A calm 1–2 minutes of focus is more valuable than 10 minutes of stress, confusion, or physical strain
Puppies are still learning how to focus
Seniors may tire easily or get overwhelmed
Going slow isn’t just okay—it’s smart training
Build duration gradually and reward the quality of the behavior, not just how long they hold it
This is how we create confident dogs who understand what we’re asking—without burning them out

❤ BREED OF THE WEEK ❤
🐾 Meet the Boster Terrier. Tracing back to the late 19th century, they originated in the United States, specifically in Boston, Massachusetts, which is how it acquired it's name. Initially, these dogs were larger than today's Boston Terriers and were referred to as "Round Heads" or "Bull Terriers." Breeders focused on refining their size and features to create a more compact and desirable pet, suitable for urban living. Through selective breeding, the Boston Terrier's size was reduced. They were recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1893.
🐾 Boston Terriers are recognized by their tuxedo-like coat, their flat wrinkle-free face with a short muzzle, large expressive eyes, naturally erect ears, and their short tails. They are known for their friendly and sociable nature and get along well with people of all ages. They are very affectionate and thrive on human interaction who enjoy being part of the family and often seek out attention from their owners.
🐾 Their friendly and sociable nature makes them highly trainable, but it's important to approach their training with patience and consistency. To reward good behaviour, Boston Terriers respond exceptionally well to positive reinforcement techniques and incentives such as praise, treats, and affection.
🐾 Boston Terriers need about 30 - 45 min of physical activity per day and this can be broken down into shorter sessions to accommodate their bursts of energy. Due to their short coats, they are sensitive to extreme weather. During hot weather, exercise should be done during cooler parts of the day, and in cold weather, shorter outdoor sessions or indoor play should be considered. They are intelligent dogs that benefit from activities that challenge their minds such puzzle toys and agility training exercises. Overall, Boston Terriers are charming, adaptable, and loving companions, making them a great addition to many households.

Dogs are always communicating—even when they’re silent.
They don't need to bark or growl to let us know something is wrong. In fact, most dogs show subtle signs of stress or discomfort long before things escalate.
Some of the early warning signs include:
👉 Head turns or looking away
👉 Whale eye (when the whites of the eyes become visible)
👉 Lip licking with no food present
👉 Stiff, frozen posture
👉 Holding their breath or shallow breathing
These are what we call “whispers.”
They're quiet attempts to cope, to create space, or to signal that they’re unsure.
When we overlook those whispers—either because we don't recognize them or choose to ignore them—dogs eventually feel they have no choice but to speak louder.
That’s when we start to see growling, snapping, or biting.
Not because they’re “bad dogs,”
Not because it came “out of nowhere,”
But because their more subtle communication wasn’t heard.
Understanding dog body language isn’t just about improving training.
It’s about building trust, improving safety, and advocating for our dogs in a world where they are often misunderstood.
Let’s make space for their whispers—so they never have to shout.

❤ BREED OF THE WEEK ❤
🐾 Meet the Shih Tzu, whose origin can be traced back over a thousand years. These small, regal dogs are believed to have descended from a cross between the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese. They were cherished by Chinese emperors and often resided within the confines of royal palaces. Their primary role was to serve as lapdogs, providing comfort and companionship to the emperors and their families. The Shih Tzu remained a closely guarded treasure within China until the early 20th century. It was only after the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912 that these dogs began to make their way to the West. They were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1969.
🐾 Shih Tzus are recognized for their distinctive face having a short muzzle and dark eyes that give them an endearing expression. Their luxurious double coat requires regular grooming and come in a variety of colours, including black, white, blue, gold, liver, or a combination of these. Shih Tzus are also known for their friendly and loving nature and are often described as affectionate lap dogs. They are good with children and other animals, making them excellent family pets.
🐾 It's important to begin training as a puppy to establish good habits early on. Tending to be on the stubborn side, consistency and patience are key when training a Shih Tzu. They respond best to positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and affection, as harsh corrections can lead to fear and anxiety.
🐾 Since this breed’s role was mainly to be a house companion, they do not require a lot of exercise. A couple of short walks each day, around 15 to 20 minutes each, are usually sufficient for this breed. If engaging in exercise, it’s important to balance it with adequate rest as they are prone to overheating due to their brachycephalic (short-nosed) nature. Being a smaller dog with minimum exercise requirements, they are a great fit for people living in apartments. In summary, the Shih Tzu is a breed with a rich history, a royal background, and an endearing personality. Their unique characteristics and fascinating past make them a beloved pet for many families around the world.

Dog Training Info
Sit Happens’ mission is to reduce the number of dogs re-homed or surrendered to rescue groups by providing affordable activities and education to dog owners. We accomplish this by taking the stress out of dog training by providing convenient and quality training that gets results quickly.
In-home training gets fast results!
By training in your home and neighborhood, we practice around in real life situations and distractions your dog encounters every day.
When training at a facility, dogs usually learn to listen in that environment only. Once you get home, the dog does not behave the same way as in class.
In a facility your trainer is not there in real life situations to help you troubleshoot and offer advice.
Training in your home let’s us work on behavioral training, such as over excitement, aggression or fearfulness, instead of just obedience training.
We do not rush training
Since each of our lessons builds on the last. Our flexible schedules allow 2-3 weeks between lessons, so you get enough practice in and are ready for the next lesson. Life gets busy and 1 week of practice is never enough for visible results.
This allows us to teach you more in 5 lessons than most other companies can in the various levels they offer.
One-on-One Training or Group Classes
Our one-on-one training style lets us customize your training program to suit your specific needs and accomplish the goals you aim for. Classes are structured and there are often not enough trainers or time to help you if you are having trouble with an exercise.
Our trainers work with you with a hands-on approach. We do not offer advice or give you a written training plan and expect you to know what to do. We create situations your dog misbehaves in and show you how to handle it.
Group classes are available in select cities and are a great option for clients looking for a more social training environment.
We are affordable
Group classes are available for clients on a budget or looking for a more social environment.
We offer competitive prices and affordable payment plans.
We improve the mental health of both you and your dog
By offering behavioral training we work on balancing your dogs unique needs and therefore improve their overall mental health.
We reduce stress in your life by creating a stronger and more respectful bond between you and your dog. No more embarrassing walks where your dog pulls, lunges or barks at your neighbors.
