Some Canadian provinces do not legally require rabies vaccination for cats or dogs. This surprises a lot of pet owners. 🐱

BC & Quebec: neither have provincial laws mandating it for cats or dogs (individual municipalities may vary). Annual rabies vaccines for strictly indoor cats are often recommended out of habit - not legal requirement or proportionate risk assessment.

International veterinary guidelines (WSAVA) state clearly: vaccines should be given at the lowest frequency consistent with protecting individual and population health. For an indoor cat with zero wildlife exposure, that’s worth a conversation.

If your cat is genuinely indoor-only, or your dog is urban and always under supervision, you have the right to ask your vet: given my pet’s actual lifestyle, what is the minimum responsible schedule?

A good vet will engage with that question 🐾

Permethrin is in countless dog flea products sold at pet stores across Canada. Dogs process it fine. Cats can’t. They lack the liver enzyme to break it down — so it accumulates in their nervous system rapidly.

Two peer-reviewed studies documented cats arriving at emergency clinics with severe tremors, hyperthermia, and seizures after permethrin exposure. In most cases, the owner had applied a dog product to their cat by mistake, or the cat had groomed a recently-treated dog.
