We are one of the few schools that posts our pricing and course schedule on the website so your have your answers quickly. Commonly asked questions. If you are new to the dog training world (we call those first time handlers), and your dog is under 4 months check out Puppy Social or Puppy Kindergarten. If you are new to training and your dog is over 4 months look into Family Manners 1. We will co

ver basics plus in home helpful tips. Heavier focus on learning to walk on a leash and stays, but be sure you plan to need more than one level for leash work. If you have taken training in the past with this dog but are ready to open your mind to a newer way of working your dogs, using shaping, capturing, focus, games, tricks and more. Check out Sport Dog 1. Less focus on walking on leash, more focus on connection. Sport dog one is not for dogs with reactive behaviours (barking/lunging, happy or not so happy) . You must complete family manners 1 first and then look into the sport dog stream should you want a little more. All programs are for all ages, but we have testing between levels. If moving over from a new school fill out the quiz and we can best direct you as to next steps! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfR3K7DHlb3GcVAxcj8E5L9Bs1VEpiJVLZCgk3xcYWzmZwzSQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

This is a big deal in our area, many 'balanced' or compulsive trainers have started to introduce food to their training and are marketing their training as positive reinforcement. There are so many more layers to understanding how to actually use positive reinforcement as a method of training. If a trainer uses punishment in their methods, they are not positive. It's balanced. Which is proven to be the most damaging style of training to use. This industry is not regulated, anyone can say anything and do anything they want with no repercussions. The only losers, are the dogs. And some times the damage doesn't show up until years after that class was over. Be sure to always do your research before letting anyone have access to your pets.

ā€œI tried positive reinforcement, but it didn’t work.ā€
That’s a common phrase, but it’s actually not accurate. Just because you give your dog a treat does not mean you are using positive reinforcement!

⭐ Positive reinforcement is an OUTCOME, not a methodology, as far as behavior principles are concerned.

A behavior that has been reinforced is a behavior that, after a particular outcome (aka, result or consequence), occurs more frequently. Learning is about behavior patterns, and the only way we, as trainers and behavior specialists, can determine if a behavior has been learned in the way we intended is to observe whether the behavior increases or decreases in frequency. In other words, what does the animal do next?

A reinforced behavior is one that gets repeated. A behavior that gets repeated is one that has been reinforced.
And here’s the important part: that reinforcement is often not tied to what you, as the trainer, thought you were teaching or ā€œreinforcing.ā€

If you're trying to reinforce Behavior A in a specific situation but Behavior B keeps happening instead, then positive reinforcement isn’t being used effectively.
In fact, reinforcement is happening, just not for the behavior you intended.
How do you know? By simply watching your pet’s behavior patterns.
What happened after you tried to reinforce Behavior A? What behavior showed up next? That’s where the real reinforcement lies.

At Synergy, whether we are working with aggressive behavior or training in scent work, our trainers always consider this question: What is reinforcing this behavior?
It is almost always about an animal attempting to meet their emotional and physical needs. Once we answer this question, we are then able to help meet this animal’s needs in a way that also meets the human’s needs- and because we understand the principles of reinforcement, we never have to utilize pain or fear to accomplish this goal.

Reinforcement drives behavior!

We are so proud of this crew! Over the past few weeks, they’ve mastered the basics, built confidence, and learned how to navigate the big world with manners and joy.

Missing from the picture is the lovable lab Millie.

Congrats, puppy grads. The future is filled with smiling humans and wagging tails.

Our Story

Having a dog is about enjoying your time with them. We believe not every dog is the same, therefore every dog should be trained appropriately to their needs. We also believe that process should be fun as well as educational. We strive to have a positive, uplifting environment where you leave feeling like you can’t wait to come back the following week. Our students are what make us, our students treat each other with complete respect and support which creates an amazing environment no matter what you are learning. Dog training is hard, there’s no denying that, but it doesn’t mean that something hard can’t also be a lot of fun when you are doing it with your best friend. We do not have a specific phone number, please check out the website for more information on classes, costs, dates, FAQ etc. www.sitdownandstay.com
