Starting the Service Dog Journey: Exposure + Skills!

Today was an exposure day instead of a heavy skills training day, and for good reason! When training service dogs, stability comes first—before they can assist someone, they need to be ROCK SOLID in different environments. If a dog is going to make it as a service dog, they can’t be spooked or overwhelmed by new sights, sounds, or people.

Enoch was exposed to heavy equipment on the street, followed by a trip into the hardware store for more training around different people and distractions. Right now, we aren’t worried on him being overly social—there are so many new sights, smells, and experiences that he needs to get used to first. Eventually, we’ll work on fine-tuning his ability to refocus back on his handler.

A highlight of the day? We got to demo Enoch learning how to target the left leg—a foundational skill that will be essential for his work in the future. His owner is doing an incredible job exposing him properly, training with patience, and putting in the work, and we absolutely love the dedication they are showing together! 💙

BK9 Success Story

We are so proud to share the incredible journey of Jeff, his family, and their amazing dog, Sid. 🐾

When Sid was just a young puppy, Jeff and his family brought him to BK9 for puppy training, and Sid started off strong. But as he reached about 6 months old, we noticed a change in his sitting position and behavior—he struggled to keep up on small pack walks. After a visit to the vet, it was discovered that Sid had genetic hip dysplasia and would need not one, but two FHO surgeries. 😔

BK9 stepped in, not only to support Sid’s healing with targeted physio work, but also to assist with the expenses of the new equipment and the cost of the surgeries. Thanks to the generous donations from BK9 Members we received, Sid was able to get the care he needed. The physio work paid off, and Sid’s healing journey continued successfully. 💪🐕

Once Sid was well on his way to recovery, we were able to return to training, including off-leash skills and parachute training to help strengthen his hindquarters. Sid and another BK9 member (Nikki and her GSP R***r) even braved a very cold winter's day to work together—what a testament to their hard work and dedication! ❄️🐶

Not only did Jeff and his family do an outstanding job making Sid the wonderful companion he is today, but they’ve also become a crucial part of the BK9 community. With their flourishing relationship with Sid, they step in to assist with dog training lessons, helping other dogs achieve their training goals along the way, as well as helping our board and train dogs. Sid, with his calm nature, impeccable manners, and lack of reactivity, is often called upon to support other training sessions. He’s a solid and reliable dog—one that we are incredibly grateful for. 🙌

We are beyond happy for Jeff, his family, and Sid. This is a true success story of resilience, love, and the incredible bond between dog and handler. Cheers to you, Jeff, and your family, for all that you've done and continue to do! ❤️🐾

❄️ Training Update – Weather Closure for in-person ❄️ ZOOM Lessons Available

Due to icy conditions and bad roads, the BK9 training fields are currently closed for in-person training due to ice. Safety always comes first—for both you and your dogs—so all sessions will be postponed until further notice. As soon as the weather clears and conditions improve, I’ll update everyone through here when they re-open.

If anyone needs immediate help in the meantime, I’m happy to set up a one-on-one Zoom lesson to work through any challenges. For existing clients, this won’t count as a normal lesson—just an extra way to keep you and your dog on track while we wait for safer conditions.

BK9 will also be doing a live Q&A in the private BK9 Facebook group, which I plan to do over the next week or so. This will be a great opportunity to ask questions, get guidance, and keep your training moving forward!

📢 Exciting News from BK9! 📢

We’re thrilled to share that at the beginning of March, privately , we’ll be hosting a special guest—a service dog trainer through CINB who specializes in K-9 working service dogs! 🐕✨

During her visit, we’ll be training together, exchanging knowledge, and discussing different aspects of dog training. I’ll be helping with behavior modification, performance obedience, reactivity, and aggression training, while she’ll be bringing her student and service dog in training to go over the techniques and standards she follows to develop K-9 working service dogs.

Service dogs play an incredible and vital role in improving people’s quality of life. Unfortunately, many individuals struggle to access one through organizations—some face long wait-lists or are deemed ineligible because they don’t meet certain "immediate crisis" criteria. I believe it’s so important for people to get the support they need before reaching that breaking point. A well-trained service dog can provide freedom, improved quality of life, improved health, connection, and independence, and I absolutely love being part of that journey. 💙

While I have privately trained service dogs—especially for PTSD and psychiatric assistance—I’m not able to certify them at the end of training, personally. However, I have successfully guided dogs through training programs that led to certification and now will be working with someone who is immediately connected through recognized organizations.

Choosing a service dog is a vital decision that requires careful consideration. The dog must have the right disposition and temperament, and be friendly or indifferent to people, animals, children, and various environments. This is because the person’s health and safety are always the top priority, and the right dog can make a world of difference in providing the necessary support. 🐾💙

We’re also excited to announce that we’ll be taking on a private puppy and client for full service dog training from puppyhood to adulthood! 🐶 This is going to be a 1-2 year training journey! Our goal is to work to help them achieve certification, ensuring the pup meets all necessary disposition, personality, and PAT (Public Access Test) requirements as they develop so that they can go on to achieve their certification through a recognized organization.

✨️BK9 SPOTLIGHT✨️

One of our incredible clients and friends from Switzerland, Damien, is not only a professional trainer, champion, decoy, and K9 handler, but also one of the most dedicated and hardworking people I know. We've had some great online one-on-one coaching sessions, working on his obedience training, and recently, he took things to the next level—traveling all the way to Spain to attend an IGP seminar with the world champion and qualifying team members. Despite the long journey and countless challenges, his work and dedication made a serious impact that made these people very impressed with his abilities.

Damien is the kind of trainer who gives his working K9 and sport prospect, Nitro, everything they need—daily dedication, structured training, a carefully managed diet, and, most importantly, a life of true companionship. Nitro isn’t an easy dog by any means—he’s strong, driven, and full of potential—and together, they’re proving just how far a committed team can go.

Damien has a very different approach to training, shaped by the fact that in Switzerland, tools like e-collars and prongs aren’t allowed. His understanding of dogs comes from a unique journey—one that started with a deep fear. As a kid, he couldn’t go near dogs, let alone touch them. To cope, he learned to read their behaviour from a distance, developing ways to communicate and keep them at bay through "obedience" at a distance. Step by step, it eventually led him to where he is now—a K9 handler, decoy, two-time Swiss Romand K9 champion, and one third-place position with his late K9 Eros.

During one of our chats, Damien suggested incorporating stranger handling into our board-and-train programs, especially for dogs struggling with aggression. Since then, we’ve added this approach for all our board-and-train dogs to improve proofing and confidence—and it’s made a huge difference.

The images we’re sharing are of Damien with his puppy, Nitro, and his past working dog, K9 Eros, who tragically passed but saved his life in the line of duty. Eros was deeply devoted to Damien—an incredible partner with unmatched mental clarity and stability, capable of anything with him. His legacy lives on, and Nitro is now following in his footsteps, building something just as special.

Thank you, Damien, for your insight, dedication, and passion. You have an incredible pup in Nitro, and I can’t wait to see what you two accomplish next. A bright and strong future ahead for both of you!

**Gracie's 5-Day Refresher! 🐾✨**

Gracie came back—this time with her owners—for an incredible 5-day refresher! 💪🐶

We dove deep into self-growth, healing, and the challenges that come with owning and training a dog like Gracie. A huge THANK YOU to our amazing BK9 volunteers who played a key role in the process! 🙌❤️

Gracie is a super sweet girl, but she’s also got a sharp edge. She knows how to challenge her owner through manipulation and even purposeful biting. This refresher gave us the chance to push training a step further, ensuring she and her owners continue to grow. 🚀

Okay... This might not look like much to some, but in just a couple short weeks, this dog has made incredible progress. We have one more week to go! Today, he was far more relaxed and connected with his surroundings, including people—a testament to how far he’s come.

We transferred his training to a new handler today, overlaying everything we’ve been working on. He’s now able to follow commands, be crated by multiple people (a huge trigger area), walk with a stranger he’s never met, and hold place commands or execute step-behinds (a term we use for the “opposites game,” where the dog turns to face and connect with the handler).

The real win? When I handed him off, he made zero attempts to strike. ZERO. To say I’m proud doesn’t even cut it—I’m absolutely ecstatic to see him working through his past triggers and challenges like this.

This isn’t a finished product, but the progress is undeniable. We had a second leash on for safety protocol, as well as the muzzle. With the right approach and consistent work, this dog is making BIG changes for the better, when you lay a clear path. I’m so pumped for his continued journey!

A special thank you to David for being a brave volunteer to help this dog. We weren't sure how he was going to respond, so we were fully prepared to help this dog through any moments or reactions that may arise.
