👑 What Are Queen Cups?
Queen cups are small, acorn-shaped cells built by bees on the edges or bottom of the comb — (along edges mean queen supersedure, bottom means preparing for a swarm) kind of like a “just in case” cradle for a future queen. The one pictured in the photo is just starting out.

At first, they’re empty. But if the colony decides it needs a new queen — due to swarming, supersedure, or queen failure — the workers may expand one of these cups into a full queen cell and place a fertilized egg inside. That larva will be fed royal jelly and raised into a potential new queen.

Key points:

Queen cups are normal in healthy hives and don’t always mean swarming.

Beekeepers monitor them closely to understand what the colony might be planning.

If you see eggs or larvae inside a queen cup, the bees are making a serious move!

Think of queen cups as a colony’s early planning stage — part of their built-in backup system for survival and growth. 🐝👑

The hive entrance: where the magic begins.
Foragers come and go, pollen gets delivered, and the whole colony stays in motion, all through this tiny doorway.
