Humane Canada thanks Fisheries and Oceans Minister Joanne Thompson for denying Marineland’s request to export 30 beluga whales to a theme park in China, and recognizes Minister of Environment and Climate Change Julie Dabrusin for her ongoing leadership in protecting these whales and all marine mammals in Canada.

Minister Thompson said she could not “in good conscience” approve the export:

“To approve the request would have meant a continued life in captivity and a return to public entertainment.”

This decision upholds the intent of Bill S-203, the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act, a landmark law that Humane Canada helped introduce in 2015 alongside former Senator Wilfred P. Moore and recognizes that exporting these social, intelligent creatures would not be in their best interests.

Canada took a historic stand protecting marine mammals from suffering and exploitation. Humane Canada continues to call for Marineland to be turned into a sanctuary to support these belugas in living out the remainder of their lives.

Nakoda has died from her injuries after being hit by a vehicle on Friday. What an absolutely disastrous blow to Banff's beleaguered grizzly population. Nakoda is now the SIXTH breeding female grizzly bear to die in the Lake Louise-Yoho-Kootenay field unit in the past four years. This is SUPPOSED to be a grizzly bear stronghold, one of three main subpopulations in Banff National Park. Instead, bears can barely stay alive for a few years due to our obsession with having to get from A to B quickly and our insatiable desire to love our parks to death.

At this point, frankly, I'm f**king mad. Not at Parks Canada, who moved mountains to try to keep this bear alive, but at us...look at f**king Canmore, doubling and tripling in size like there are no long-term consequences for wildlife. This is the bell tolling on our absolute idiocy as a species. Do we REALLY need more hotels in Banff and Canmore and Jasper and Whistler and Gardiner and Yosemite, or is what we REALLY need more protected areas, more wildlife, more responsibility and consequences for our actions? Does everyone really NEED to have a second house in the mountains? Tax the f**k out of people if that's what they think they need/want.

Am I ranting? F**k yes I am. I'm so tired of this BS. Poor Nakoda and her little cubs were the future of Banff's grizzly bears, and guess what? That future looks terrible right now. Time for a summit to figure out what we do next, because the status quo is not working.

Donate, volunteer, get involved people. It's time.

Every , rabbits are bought by people who DO NOT know how to give them the proper care, and often don’t want to learn. They just get them because it’s Easter. Statistics show that over 80% of rabbits bought for Easter don’t make it to their first birthday.

Why? Because they are often abandoned after a few months because they are a lot of work, or the child loses interest. When you “buy” a rabbit from a breeder they are not spayed or neutered like they are when you adopt from a rescue.

Rabbits need to be spayed or neutered not just to prevent breeding, but for health and behavior reasons. The average cost to spay or neuter a rabbit and have it vaccinated is around $400. This $30 rabbit someone just bought is now going to cost them more than they want to spend and is now unwanted after it because cage aggressive or starts spraying urine.

Many of these rabbits are just given away and the same thing happens. Many are taken to city and country shelters that are overloaded and euthanizing rabbits to make room for more abandoned rabbits. Rabbits that are abandoned outside generally won’t live more than a few days before a predator gets them.

If you are thinking about getting a rabbit, take the time to talk to a rabbit rescue and learn all about them to see if you are the right home for a rabbit before you get one.

Please help us spread the word. Buy a chocolate or toy rabbit this Easter, not a REAL ONE!

We can make history together! Ask the Canadian Government to fulfill their promise of banning the export of life horses for slaughter. Canadians support this ban and thousands have already spoken up. Add your voice: https://nwmd.io/s/facebook/ZxM_BzbEHPHpRGqjKbc=/r
