🦎 Crested Geckos: More Than Just a Beginner Reptile
Lily, our crested gecko, helps us educate the public about one of the most commonly misunderstood reptiles in the pet trade.
Native to the forests of New Caledonia, crested geckos are often marketed as "easy" pets. While they can be an excellent reptile for dedicated keepers, they still require specialized care and a significant long-term commitment.
A healthy crested gecko requires: • A properly sized vertical enclosure with plenty of climbing opportunities • Appropriate temperature and humidity levels • UVB lighting and a suitable day/night cycle • A balanced diet designed specifically for crested geckos • Regular monitoring of health, weight, and environmental conditions
One fact that surprises many people is their lifespan. With proper care, crested geckos can live 15–20 years or longer. Purchasing one should be viewed as a commitment similar to adopting a dog or cat, not as a short-term hobby.
Their popularity has unfortunately led to impulse purchases and, in some cases, neglect when owners discover the level of care required. As a rescue, we frequently encourage potential owners to research enclosure requirements, ongoing costs, and long-term responsibilities before bringing any reptile home.
Lily serves as an ambassador for her species, helping us demonstrate that reptiles are complex animals with specific needs deserving of the same respect and consideration as any other companion animal.
Responsible pet ownership starts long before an animal comes home—it starts with education. 🦎❤️
