🦎 Crested Geckos: More Than Just a Beginner Reptile

Lily, our crested gecko, helps us educate the public about one of the most commonly misunderstood reptiles in the pet trade.

Native to the forests of New Caledonia, crested geckos are often marketed as "easy" pets. While they can be an excellent reptile for dedicated keepers, they still require specialized care and a significant long-term commitment.

A healthy crested gecko requires: • A properly sized vertical enclosure with plenty of climbing opportunities • Appropriate temperature and humidity levels • UVB lighting and a suitable day/night cycle • A balanced diet designed specifically for crested geckos • Regular monitoring of health, weight, and environmental conditions

One fact that surprises many people is their lifespan. With proper care, crested geckos can live 15–20 years or longer. Purchasing one should be viewed as a commitment similar to adopting a dog or cat, not as a short-term hobby.

Their popularity has unfortunately led to impulse purchases and, in some cases, neglect when owners discover the level of care required. As a rescue, we frequently encourage potential owners to research enclosure requirements, ongoing costs, and long-term responsibilities before bringing any reptile home.

Lily serves as an ambassador for her species, helping us demonstrate that reptiles are complex animals with specific needs deserving of the same respect and consideration as any other companion animal.

Responsible pet ownership starts long before an animal comes home—it starts with education. 🦎❤️

We often hear the comment “Fiona should be released into the wild.”

While we absolutely understand where that thought comes from, the reality is far more complicated.

Fiona is not a wild-born native fox that was rescued from nature. Fiona is a marbled fox — a fox bred in captivity for the fur industry. Marbled foxes are hybrids, typically a mix of red fox and arctic fox genetics, selectively bred for appearance and coat colour.

Fiona’s beautiful white coat may look stunning, but in the wild it would actually work against her.

Here in Ontario, her colouring and genetics would make survival extremely difficult. She lacks the natural camouflage and adaptations needed for local ecosystems. At the same time, her traits are also unsuitable for true Arctic environments. She is essentially caught between two worlds — created by humans, not nature.

Beyond that, releasing captive-bred wildlife is not simply a “choice.” In Ontario, releasing wildlife into the wild is heavily regulated and generally prohibited without authorization from the province. Captive wildlife, especially hybrids or non-native genetics, cannot legally just be released because it can create serious risks to native wildlife populations, disease transmission, and ecosystem balance.

Trust us when we say this:
we would LOVE for all of our animals to be back in their natural habitats where they belong. That is the dream. Our dream would honestly be to not have this “job” anymore because there would be no neglected, abandoned, illegally owned or captive-bred animals needing rescue.

But sadly, that is not the reality.

Animals like Fiona were brought into this world by humans and rely on humans for survival. Releasing her would not be “setting her free” — it would most likely be sentencing her to suffering and death.

Fiona has spent her life around humans. She receives veterinary care, proper nutrition, enrichment, warmth, safety, and daily interaction. A fox raised this way does not suddenly develop the survival skills needed to hunt, establish territory, avoid predators, survive harsh winters, or compete with truly wild foxes.

So instead of abandoning her to a fate she was never prepared for, we choose to give her the best life possible:
special treats before bed, belly scratches, cuddle sessions, grooming time, enrichment, love, and safety.

Fiona is exactly where she belongs — safe, cared for, and deeply loved. ❤️

🚫 Adoption applications are automatically declined the moment breeding is mentioned. 🚫

This is a policy that sometimes disappoints people, but it exists for a reason.

As a rescue, our mission is to provide safe, permanent homes for animals already in need. We are not here to supply breeding stock.

Unfortunately, many of the species we care for cannot be sterilized. Most reptiles, for example, cannot simply be spayed or neutered like a dog or cat. This makes preventing unnecessary breeding much more challenging and requires us to be extremely careful about where our animals are placed.

Every year, rescues across North America are overwhelmed with unwanted reptiles, birds, small mammals, and exotic pets. Many originate from accidental or intentional breeding, followed by owners who are unable to care for the offspring.

When you adopt from us, you are giving an animal a second chance—not starting a breeding project.

We understand that responsible breeders exist, but our responsibility is to the animals already waiting for homes. For that reason, any mention of breeding, future breeding plans, or acquiring a mate for breeding purposes will result in an adoption application being refused.

Thank you for understanding and for helping us prioritize rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care for animals in need. ❤️

Mishka !
Our Virginia opossum’s favorite activity in the wildlife center is destroying every neatly folded towel and blanket pile she can find just to sneak in a nap. 😂

The keepers spend time making everything look clean and organized… meanwhile she waddles over like:

“Perfect. My bed is ready.”

Within seconds she’s tunneled herself into the blankets like a big potato. The only issue? She always forgets to tuck in her little bum and tail, so there’s just an opossum backside sticking out of the pile while she thinks she’s complet ely hidden.

Master of camouflage. 0/10 stealth.

🚨 Vehicle Needed for the Wildlife Center 🚨

We are reaching out to our amazing community to see if anyone has a vehicle for sale that could help our rescue efforts. Ideally, we are looking for a hatchback or small SUV in the $3,000 range or less.

This vehicle would be used daily for:
🏥 Veterinary appointments
📦 Supply pickups
🚑 Animal rescues & transports
🐾 General wildlife center operations

With more than 90 animals currently in our care, we are constantly on the road… and unfortunately our GMC Acadia has decided to die on us after investing more than $4,000 into it this past year alone. Timing could not have been worse during one of our busiest seasons.

In an ideal world, we are hoping to find something that is already safetied or would easily pass a safety.

If you know of anything available, please send us a message or email us at:

As always, thank you for supporting our animals and helping us continue this crazy rescue journey. ❤️

Fiona, our beautiful marbled fox and fur farm survivor ❤️

Every single night, Fiona gets spoiled like the queen she is. Specialty treats before bed, belly scratches, one-on-one cuddle time, grooming sessions, and surprise meals that make her vocalize with excitement like the happy girl she truly is.

Watching her thrive will never get old to us. A fox who was once destined for a life on a fur farm now spends her days safe, loved, and cherished beyond words.

We continue to treasure every moment with Fiona and remind ourselves how different her story could have been. Instead of fear and confinement, she knows comfort, enrichment, patience, and love.

She deserves every second of it ❤️

Marley, our Patagonian mara ❤️

No matter how adorable, calm, or dog-like Marley may seem, it’s important to remember that he is still a wild animal. Patagonian maras are one of the largest rodents in the world and are naturally skittish prey animals. Their instincts are very different from traditional domesticated pets.

Marley is not cuddly, does not enjoy being restrained, and like most rodents, he LOVES to chew. Furniture, wires, walls, clothing… nothing is truly safe around a mara! 😅

These incredible animals can also jump up to 5 feet in the air with ease! They are highly sensitive to stress, sudden noises, and unfamiliar environments.

While social media often makes exotic animals look like fun, easy pets, the reality is very different. Patagonian maras do not belong in the average home environment. Their needs are complex, and many end up surrendered when owners realize how challenging they truly are.

We love Marley dearly and will continue to give him the specialized care and environment he deserves — but he is a perfect example of why wild animals belong with experienced caregivers, not as impulse pets ❤️

New chinchillas - Update!

Rain and Cloud have settled in beautifully since arriving here at Meet The Keepers ❤️

Coming from a hoarding situation into a calm, stress-free environment has already made such a difference for these two chinchillas.

Cloud is an absolute sweetheart who already enjoys hand feeding, head scratches, and soaking up attention from the team 🥹

Rain is still very defensive and understandably untrusting of humans, but we continue to give her all the patience, space, and love she needs to learn she is finally safe.

Healing takes time, and every small step forward is a big victory 💕
