✨ new adoptable - meet Taco ✨

Male | 8.5 months old | 10 pounds | Medium energy | Needs slow intros to dogs | Best with no kids | Hasn’t met cats | From Mexico | Fostered in Waterloo | Sweet & sensitive | A loyal companion

We’ve got a new adoptable, so let’s TACO ‘bout it. You already guessed his name, but did you guess that he’s a sweet and sensitive soul? This leads us to a few conclusions, the first being that practicing calmness helps him focus. The second is that he’d enjoy the predictability that a home with no young kids offers. The last being that he’ll live his best scruff life when meeting other dogs slowly with proper intros. Shell yeah!

If you don’t love TACO(s), well, he’s nacho type. This certainly isn’t the case for TACO’s foster parents, though. As the third foster dog they’ve had in their care, they enjoy TACO’s enthusiasm for cuddles and ability to quickly pick up new cues in training. He also develops a close bond with his humans, and, to that, all we can say is TACO ‘bout awesome! Having his people to himself is his preference, but know that his neediness for attention means boundaries and structure are necessary.

Developing confidence in foster care is what is enabling TACO to build trust in his humans while out and about on walks (or hikes, which he quite likes!) and exploring new places. TACO ‘bout a good time. This clear communication between him and his foster parents is what’s made the adjustment period of living in a new home easier. Lately, TACO has been working on his vocal tendencies. He responds well to correction, and it now doesn’t take him long to settle in his crate.

TACO has experienced living with his foster fam’s resident dog, and after a slow and steady intro and time to warm up to living with her, now enjoys initiating play. Seven days without TACO(s) makes one weak. Apply to adopt this one and live like every day is TACO Tuesday!

💕 new arrival! - meet Sienna 💕

Sienna is 4 years old, just arrived from Mexico, and is medium sized.

✨From her foster-
“Sienna is a goofy cuddly gal! She sleeps well through the night in her crate. She has a big personality and wants to say hi to every person she sees. She is super friendly and cuddly. She loves her pink stuffy and involves it in her daily evening zoomies”

Welcome Sienna! 💕💕

💕 Do you remember Lexi (Queen) from way back in 2018? 💕

Lexi came into our care in 2018 as a pregnant stray from Manitoba. She had a litter of 7 puppies in early 2019 and then found her amazing furever home! 🐾

Her humans had this to say -

“Lexi (Queen) update, she is the best thing that ever happened to our family! Coming into her senior years and is happy and healthy!🧡🖤💛”

We love staying in contact with our adopters and getting these updates years later to be able to see the way a scruffs life has transformed & their humans as well! ✨

✨ new adoptable - meet Rocky ✨

Male | 8 years old | 12 pounds | Low energy | Has met young kids | Enjoys meeting dogs & people | Hasn’t met cats | From Ontario | Fostered in Peterborough | Sweet & gentle

Sweet. Chill. Gentle. Those three little words sum up ROCKY over here to a tee. As his foster family’s first-ever (!!!) experience fostering an SOS scruff, life with ROCKY has been equal parts challenging and rewarding. Learning new things every day has been a given, and on the whole, they’ve found this scruff to be loving and friendly. Basically, he’s not one to shy away from new pals, especially when affection is on the line!

An early riser, ROCKY likes to get up and at ‘em and enjoys a leisurely stroll first thing in the AM. As an eight-year-old scruff, he likes spending his time napping and snoring, training, and hanging out outside. You should see his happy dance when he hears the word “outside!” Oh, and he loves receiving pets from humans. Talking about humans, ROCKY is pretty great when it comes to greeting people.

ROCKY has made great strides with his separation anxiety and now settles more quickly in his crate with only some initial barking. Establishing boundaries with him is key, and he’s been busy practicing crate training for this reason. We’re happy to report he now regularly naps there throughout the day. Learning to become more independent and comfortable when his people leave the home is a big step for him. When it comes down to it, ROCKY does get a little bit of FOMO and, generally speaking, would like to be included in your plans when possible. Your leisurely plans, that is, not so much hikes or runs of any kind!

If you guessed that ROCKY is looking for a quiet and less active home, you’d be right. Having another calm, chill dog in the home could work well for ROCKY, too. He’s always happy to stop and say hello to dogs while out on walks before carrying on. This particular scruff isn’t too interested in play (or toys for that matter!), so living with a dog that has a similar energy level as him would be ideal.

✨ new adoptable - meet Vidhira ✨

Female | 1.5 years old | 33 pounds | High energy | Needs proper intros to dogs, best as a solo dog in the home | Limited interactions with kids | Hasn’t met cats | From Mexico | Fostered in Toronto | Affectionate | Goofball

Playful and affectionate, you could say VIDHIRA is a bit of a goofball. Sure, she can be a little shy here and there, but for the most part, she’s a confident gal who’s got a lot of love (and energy!) to share.

So, like we said, VIDHIRA’s got a high energy level. Do you happen to enjoy running? If so, you may have just found the greatest running buddy. If that’s not your thing, don’t worry. This gal loves a good game of fetch and will happily take part in food puzzles to exercise that brain of hers. Is she food-motivated? Definitely.

VIDHIRA needs slow and steady introductions to other dogs. While previously living with another dog, she displayed some resource guarding. This tells us that VIDHIRA would do best as a solo dog in her adoptive home. Now, while she hasn’t yet met cats, we do know that she is highly curious about small animals, so just make sure to monitor any interactions with them.

As you may have determined, VIDHIRA will do well in an active home. She also may do well living with older, dog-savvy kids. As of right now, she’s only met children at the park, so getting used to having more kids interact with her is the next best step. Otherwise, her typical schedule at the moment involves 3 walks per day and at least 2 separate play sessions. If we’re talking training levels, this gal is now comfortable using her crate (huge win!) and continues to work on leash walking.

Interested in VIDHIRA? Apply to adopt!

✨ new intake - meet Taylor Spots ✨

Taylor Spots just arrived and is already living the life of a show dog. Well, when you have ears this cute — you’re always on display.

Taylor is under a year and already has the longest legs (it was so hard to crop around them for photos). He only just arrived this weekend and while he was initially pretty scared, he’s already warming up well.

His foster says his favourite things are toys, food, head scratches and chewing anything he can find. He’s still adjusting to being outside, loud noises, going down stairs. All things you don’t learn while living at a shelter.

Taylor will settle into care more before we post him for adoption, but we knew you’d want to meet him!!

Welcome Taylor Spots 💞✨🐶

We’re thrilled to share that Save Our Scruff was selected as a recipient of the Purina Canada Happy Paws & Operation grant from the amazing team at Petfinder Foundation Purina Canada

This grant helped us give seven very special dogs the fresh start they deserved.
In mid-June, a group of chihuahuas – ranging in age from senior to tiny nursing puppies – came into our care after being brought to a local shelter. The shelter was overcrowded, and these little ones needed help.

Meet the whole pack:
- Chico & Rosa – sweet 12-year-old seniors
- Sadie & Chanel – both around 7 years old
- Levi – just a few months old and full of curiosity
- Pedro & Pascal – 8-week-old puppies still being nursed by their mom, Rosa, at the time of rescue

Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation’s grant, we were able to cover most of their veterinary care and place each one into loving foster homes.

We can’t thank the Petfinder Foundation enough for helping us continue our mission and giving these scruffs a second chance.
