We’ve been quiet lately, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy!!
Holy guacamole!!
Lookit all that!
Correction. We did not make any guacamole.
But we did make salsa, tomato sauce, pasta sauce, cowboy candy, hot pepper rings, ketchup, a bevy of jams & jellies, dried peppers (to be ground for spice- THE SPICE MUST FLOW!), and a WHOLE lot more came out of the garden for processing this year! Not to mention the smorgasbord of garden/ local dinners we’ve crafted in the Gus kitchen.
Wow!
Exhaustion.
But happy exhaustion.

How has everyone else’s harvesting been?
Are you fall planting anything?
Are you planning next season already?
What scary movies are you watching?
Have you seen my hat? I lost it.

I think we need to sleep.

Happy harvesting!

It’s Salsa Time! 🌶️ 🧅 🍅 🫑

If anyone is looking for heirloom tomatoes, we have our 1lb mixed batch of heirlooms we can put together as our delish tomatoes FINALLY start ripening. $6. Market is over but we can do meet ups at Rose n Crantz or elsewhere.

Message if interested.

Otherwise it’s all ketchup & salsa!

Our old lady cat Fate has approved these vegetables to go out into the world. The Gus (and probably Fate) will be at the Kakabeka Farmers' Market this Saturday 9:30-12:30 for OUR FINAL market of the season. The market will continue til the end of September (and you should go and check out all the fabulous marketeers!) but Fate has other commitments the last two weeks (modeling is gruelling work) so THIS Saturday the 13th will be the LAST for the Gus. We will have heirloom tomato collections, summer zucchini & squash, winter squash, onions, tomatillos, peppers (jalapeño, hot wax, cayenne, pepperoncini), dried cayenne, mint, dill & basil salt. Aaaand MAYBE the absolute last of our dill? And of course arts & crafties. See you there!

We’re at Kakabeka Farmers' Market tomorrow, Saturday September 6. It may be chilly but we’ve got hot peppers! We also have mixed baskets of Heritage tomatoes, tomatillos, onions, the last of our dill, and packets of dried herbs - mint and ground cayenne. We also have basil salt! come on out and see what your community has been growing for you! It may have cooled off in school has started, but the market is still going!

So this is what 200 tomato plants looks like at harvest time. Kind of. That’s not even all of it in the pics. A little earlier than we hoped for but with the temp drop coming tonight (and already today, brrrr!) we didn’t want to risk losing all these tasty veggies. Most of the peppers are still in the greenhouses and there are still a variety of plants on the covered deck, so that’s not ALL of it, but most.
Did you pull your veg? Or are you covering and hoping for the best? How did your gardens go this year? What worked? What didn’t?

Our Tomatillos are coming up for harvest… should we bring some to market next weekend?
Ya know, just in case someone really wants to make Salsa Verde. (We’ll be bringing the hot peppers to go in that, too!)

Tonight’s local dinner feature! Our bean mix (green, yellow, purple & dragon tongue) in a cheesy bacon cream sauce (bacon via Barefoot Farm), with corn we picked up today at Kakabeka Farmers' Market (can’t remember the vendor name, sorry!). Bbq steak (not local 🥴). Paired with Three Dog Winery’s Dog House White. Also dehydrating our dill and making some tomato sauce from some of the very few of our ripened tomatoes. So many green tomatoes! Music feature tonight was Beck- Mutations and Brothers Osborne- Skeletons. Stay safe. Love well. Eat good.

All set up at the Kakabeka Farmers' Market here 9:30-12:30!

Food weekend (and Monday)! Mushroom quiche made in part with pink oyster mushrooms from Kam River Mushroom Farm, our green onions, our neighbour’s eggs and Mel’s killer pastry recipe. With it was our sliced English Cucumber, prairie fire tomatoes and king of the North peppers. ALSO made this weekend was blueberry lemon basil jam (algoma highland blueberries and our basil), amaretto chokecherry jam (chokecherries along our road), cheddar zucchini loaf (our zucchinis & lactose free cheddar so Merk doesn’t die). Yum. Local tastes delish!
