Not all “dog behaviorists” are created equal
and here’s why that matters!
Dog behavior (and training) is an unregulated field where anyone can use titles and the methods that they see fit on your dog.
The title behaviorist isn’t just a fancy label. it’s a professional title that carries a very high standard of education, supervised experience, and ethical accountability.
There are only two kinds of professionals who can officially and ethically call themselves behaviorists at an internationally recognised professional standard:
🔹 Veterinary Behaviorists – Licensed veterinarians with advanced, specialised training in animal behavior and board-certified. They can diagnose medical causes of behavior issues and prescribe medication when needed.
🔹 Applied Animal Behaviorists – Experts with a graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in animal behavior and extensive hands-on, supervised experience working with animals in clinical or applied settings.
Anyone else using the title behaviorist without these qualifications is a big red flag 🚩
Why? Because addressing complex behavior problems—especially aggression, severe fear, or anxiety—isn’t just about “training.” It requires:
✅ A deep understanding of the science of behavior, biology, ethology, and learning
✅ Knowledge of animal neurobiology and the impact of stress
✅ The ability to identify medical contributors to behavior
✅ Skills to design safe, effective, and humane intervention plans
Without this level of education and supervised experience, there’s a real risk of:
⚠️ Misdiagnosis of the problem
⚠️ Using harmful or outdated methods that worsen fear or stress
⚠️ Missing underlying medical issues that are driving behavior changes
⚠️ Damaging the dog-guardian relationship through coercion or punishment
Titles matter because your dog matters!
Before you hire anyone to help with behavior - ask for credentials.
In fact you shouldn't even have to ask for them because they should be readily available. I've never met another behaviorist who doesn't showcase their educatio!
Protect your dog by choosing a professional who is truly qualified to protect your dog's mental health, your relationship, and your resources.
