NEWS RELEASE: Federation of Labour Launches Workplace Heat Stress Campaign

Wednesday, July 9, 2025

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour (NLFL) launched a workplace heat stress campaign today to address the growing issue of excessive heat in workplaces.

“Heat exposure is a life-threatening occupational hazard with serious short- and long-term consequences – and it can escalate dangerously fast,” said NLFL President Jessica McCormick. “As our planet warms, heat stress is becoming a workplace crisis within the broader climate crisis. Workers must know their rights, employers must take immediate action to protect them, and governments must implement strong policies to ensure worker safety.”

The campaign focuses on three key priorities:

- Educating workers on the signs and dangers of heat stress, as well as their legal rights to a safe workplace;

- Collecting worker experiences through an online survey and a “Share Your Story” form to document how heat impacts their health and their work; and

- Demanding action from employers and governments to implement stronger protections against extreme heat.

“This summer, we’ll be engaging with workers, on the ground and online, to hear firsthand how heat stress affects them, how has the situation changed in recent years, whether employers are taking proper precautions, and what more must be done to keep workers safe,” said McCormick. “Many workers in our province face extreme heat at work, whether indoors or outdoors, and the situation will only get worse as climate change makes our summers hotter. The information we gather and the conversations we have will drive our fight for change.”

New analysis by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives reveals the devastating impact that funding cuts would have on our federal public services and the hard-working people who deliver them - if they follow through on their election promises.

Now is not the time for cuts and austerity. We need strong public services to support people and our economy, especially in the face of ongoing trade issues.

The report finds:

The Liberal platform promised $13 billion in “savings” by the 2028-29 fiscal year—that’s a 10 per cent cut of the entire federal operating expenses.

This means the $13 billion cut will mostly be in personnel expenditures in non-defence departments. It would amount to a cut of 24 per cent—dramatically worse than Stephen Harper’s 10 per cent cuts on some departments and rivaling Paul Martin’s 1995 cuts of 18.9 per cent.

If the prime minister follows through on his election promise, Canada’s federal public service will undergo the worst spending cuts in modern history. That will inevitably diminish the quality of public services

Memorial Day – today we honour Newfoundland Regiment who fought at Beaumont Hamel during the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916.

Of the nearly 800 young Newfoundlanders who went "over the top" that day, only 68 answered roll call the next morning. In a single devastating battle, the regiment was nearly erased.

We will remember them.

On , Canada’s unions are calling attention to the mental health impacts of work.

Health care workers, first responders, educators, journalists, and countless others face high levels of psychological stress. Yet far too many workers are denied support or compensation when they suffer from work-related PTSD.

Trauma doesn’t clock out.

Workers deserve mental health protections, universal access to PTSD supports, and workers’ compensation that recognizes psychological injuries.
