Kennel cough is on the rise... here's what you need to know.

Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads quickly anywhere dogs socialize — daycare, boarding, grooming salons, training classes, dog parks, even vet waiting rooms.

✅ Common Signs & Symptoms

A dry, honking cough (often sounds like a goose honk)
Gagging or retching, especially after coughing
Sneezing and runny nose
Mild lethargy
Reduced appetite (sometimes)
Watery eyes

Most dogs still act fairly normal, but the cough can be persistent and annoying — and it can last 1–3+ weeks.

🦠 How Kennel Cough Spreads

Kennel cough is spread through:
Coughing / sneezing droplets in the air
Direct nose-to-nose contact

Shared items like:
-Water bowls
-Toys
-Leashes
-Kennels/Crates
-Grooming tools

🚨 Even dogs that “seem fine” can spread it while incubating or recovering.

What You Can Do

Take your dog to the vet for the Bordetella vaccine for kennel cough, if they're not already vaccinated.

If you suspect kennel cough:
✅ Isolate your dog from other dogs immediately
✅ Rest & hydration are key
✅ Use a harness instead of a collar to avoid irritating the throat
✅ Keep them in a calm environment (avoid heavy exercise)

📌 Call your vet ASAP if your dog has:

Trouble breathing
Fever
Loss of appetite
Thick/yellow/green discharge
Lethargy that seems more than mild
Cough lasting more than a couple of weeks
Any symptoms in a puppy, senior, or immunocompromised dog

Kennel cough is usually treatable, but it can develop into pneumonia in higher-risk dogs — so don’t ignore worsening symptoms.

Over the past while, Tails to Toes has been busier than ever, and I am incredibly grateful for the trust, support, and kindness you’ve shown me 💛
To make sure I can continue providing the same level of care, attention, and reliability to my current clients, I’ll be moving into a soft pause on taking on new clients. New inquiries will still be considered on a case-by-case basis, allowing me to thoughtfully manage my schedule and availability.
Because of this, I won’t be posting my opening dates publicly as I normally do. If you’re hoping to book or inquire, please fill out the Google Form linked in my bio, and I’ll respond as soon as I’m able.

I wanted to share a quick update about booking with Tails to Toes.

Over the last three months, Tails to Toes has been growing much faster than I ever anticipated — something I’m incredibly grateful for. With that growth, I’ve found it can be challenging at times to keep up with the volume of messages and booking requests, especially as a part-time, mobile business.

I’ve heard from some of you that my response times can feel a bit long, and I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. I genuinely care for each and every client, and it’s so important to me that no one feels overlooked.

Big changes + exciting news! 🐾💛
As some of you know, the ER I worked at has closed down, which means I’ve lost my full-time job. I’ve decided to take a step back from ER life and have accepted a part-time position at a general practice clinic in Sherwood Park!
What this means for you:
✨ Faster replies (no more night shifts!)
✨ More appointment days — 1–2 weekends + 2–3 weekdays each month!
I start my new job November 13th, so product orders are paused until mid-November while I settle in.
🎄 I’ll be taking Dec 19–29 off to spend Christmas with my mom (she’s visiting — yay!). I’ll do my best to get everyone booked before the holidays so all our furry friends are looking their best.

✨ Meet Mr. Opie! ✨

Back in May, Opie’s mom reached out with a challenge: a big boy, with big feelings… and even bigger toenails!

Those who know me, know two things:

💪 I don’t back down from a challenge.
💜 I especially love helping friends with big anxiety.

Opie is a gentle giant, but nail trims have always been a struggle. His size allowed him to avoid them for quite some time, which left his nails overgrown and his feet sore.

✅ On our first visit, we got 3/4 of his feet done before he told us (loud and clear!) that he’d had enough. Opie is a fantastic communicator—he squirmed, he growled, and finally, he (gently) used his teeth to say “stop.” His mom was his advocate, and we listened. It took us approximately 45 minutes.

❌ On our second visit, despite all our planning, we ignored his signals and things didn’t go well. Opie and his parents were stressed, and we didn’t get a single nail done.
But here’s the thing—we didn’t give up. Instead, Opie’s mom and I shared thoughtful emails, dissected what went wrong, and made a new plan. We added pharmaceutical anxiety support, muzzle training, and re-focused on his comfort.

🌟 And today… SUCCESS! 🌟
Opie had all four feet trimmed without hitting his threshold. We listened, adjusted, and respected his boundaries. He was an absolute superstar - and it only took us about 20 minutes!

This is why I always tell my clients: patience and partnership pay off. When we honor our pets’ communication and work with them, the impossible becomes possible.

I am so proud of Opie, his amazing family, and the trust they placed in me. Here’s to many more successful visits with this big-hearted boy! 🐶💜
