The time of year when our resident ghost, Jerry, makes an appearance!

๐Ÿ‘ปJerry has shown up for his annual exam! This year he opted for Senior Blood work as well, as he is 6 years old โ€“ officially a senior ghoul!
๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธAnnual checkups and blood work are important to ensure that your pet is in ๐’ฎ๐“…๐‘œ๐‘œ๐“€-๐“‰๐’ถ๐’ธ๐“Š๐“๐’ถ๐“‡ health every year! It helps your veterinary team catch any problems that your pet (or ghoul) may have early on, as well as help prevent health ๐’ฎ๐’ธ๐’ถ๐“‡๐‘’๐“ˆ down the road!

๐Ÿง›๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธAfter checking in and getting weighed, Jerry saw Dog-tor Karl to make sure his heart was not beating (Dog-tor Cedar was out of office today) and then was brought to the back to have his ghost blood drawn and temperature checked!
๐Ÿ’€After his visit this year, we are happy to report that Jerry is in ๐”—๐”ข๐”ฏ๐”ฏ๐”ฌ๐”ฏ-๐”ฆ๐”ฃ๐”ฆ๐”  shape and he is excited to haunt the clinic for another year.

๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› Donโ€™t be a ๐’ฎ๐’ธ๐’ถ๐“‡๐‘’๐’น๐“Ž ๐’ธ๐’ถ๐“‰ and give us a call today to book your pet in for an annual exam!๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›
I promise Jerry is nice. Maybe youโ€™ll meet himโ€ฆ

With Turkey day fast approaching, here are some common hazards for your pet during the Thanksgiving season ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ‚

๐ŸฆƒGarlic Mashed Potatoes ~ Garlic is toxic to dogs and cats, and so is onion powder! Avoid letting them eat any dish that has lots of garlic or onion in the recipe!

๐ŸฆƒSweetened Homemade Desserts ~ Not only can they cause stomach upset, but some sweeteners we use in our favourite Thanksgiving treats can contain Xylitol which is very toxic to our furry friends.

๐ŸฆƒDรฉcor ~ Some dรฉcor has small parts that can look like a fun toy or even a treat to out pets. The small parts of our decor can cause intestinal blockages.

๐ŸฆƒTurkey ~ Turkey is very hard to digest for our pets and can lead to severe stomach upset. If your pet ingests enough turkey, they can get pancreatitis which is very painful. Turkey bones also pose a significant threat as they can cause intestinal blockages, tear up your pets digestive tract with sharp edges, and pose a choking hazard.

๐ŸฆƒScented Candles/Diffusers ~ Fumes of our fall scented candles and diffusers can be hard on our petsโ€™ respiratory tract. Prolonged exposure of certain fumes can cause skin irritation, vomiting, and even neurological symptoms. Make sure that you look into your diffuser oils and sticks to ensure that none of them are toxic to your pet. Make sure that candles are up where pets arenโ€™t able to tip them over as well.

๐ŸฆƒSpiked Drinks/Alcohol ~ Letting your pet enjoy some thanksgiving beverages poses a huge threat to their health. Some major side effects of your pet drinking alcohol include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, low blood sugar, tremors and can even lead to comas or death. Make sure to keep the apple cider for people not pets!

๐Ÿ‚Please remember that we will be closed for the Thanksgiving weekend, but if you are having an emergency call one of the local emergency clinics!๐Ÿ‚

With 27 confirmed Salmonella Cases believed to be linked to pet food/treats, we thought we would share a blog post breaking down the implications this holds for you and your petโ€™s safety!

Written by Dr. Scott Weese - hopefully he helps answer any questions about the on going situation! Information is limited still but we will try to keep everyone updated as we also get information!

Could your dog save a life? Our friends at Pulse Veterinary Specialists & Emergency and Canadian Animal Blood Bank are there to help.

Did you know your dog could help save another dogโ€™s life just by being their sweet, treat-loving self? ๐Ÿพ

The Canadian Animal Blood Bank is always looking for doggy donors, and there's a cool perk a lot of people may not know about: for every donation your dog gives, a credit is placed on their file for 1 free unit of blood in case they ever need it down the road. That means if they donate 6 times, theyโ€™ve got 6 free units credited to them, just in case. โค๏ธ Check out the photo below to find more fun perks for your dog when they become a blood donor! ๐Ÿฉธ

At Pulse, weโ€™re so honored to support the Canadian Animal Blood Bank and host donor clinics right here at our hospital all the time. Itโ€™s one of our favorite ways to give back to the dog community ๐Ÿพ

To be a donor, dogs need to:
๐Ÿถ Be 1โ€“8 years old
โš–๏ธ Weigh over 55 lbs (25kg)
๐Ÿ’‰ Be up to date on vaccines
๐Ÿ˜Š Have an even-temperament
๐Ÿฉบ Be in good health
๐Ÿ– And, of course, love treats!

If this sounds like your pup, send an email to [email protected] and theyโ€™ll provide further information and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

This kind of thing really does save lives โ€” and your dog could be the reason another pup gets to go home to their family. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

We have been fielding many calls from concerned members of the public regarding bats, as is typical for this time of year, so we figured it was a good time to do another post about bats! ๐Ÿฆ‡

Alberta has nine species of bats. Specifically, within the Edmonton area, there are Big Brown Bats, Little Brown Bats, Silver-Haired Bats, and occasionally Hoary Bats. Although many bats migrate south, Big Brown Bats actually migrate into the city and urban areas. This makes bat sightings in August and September quite common, often in potentially unusual locations.

Wondering what to do if you come across a bat? If they are hanging vertically, even from a wall, they are likely just fine and should be left alone. These bats are probably just sunning and would appreciate being left undisturbed. However, if you find a bat on the ground, be sure to give us a call! Bats cannot take flight from a horizontal surface, so we can guide you through the proper steps to help in a way that is safe for both you and the bat.

Bats can act as vectors for rabies and have also been confirmed to carry White-Nose Syndrome in the Edmonton area. White-Nose Syndrome is a species-specific fungus that can be fatal to bats if contracted. Due to these health concerns, please call WILDNorth and access information via the link below. Always ask before you act, so we can ensure safety for everyone.

Follow this link to access an exceptional resource for information on bats: https://www.albertabats.ca/

We do everything we can to help every creature that comes through our doors, and for each animal, this care looks very different. If we have a bat recuperating in our care, we keep it in isolation and offer it a secluded enclosure with mealworms for dinner.
