My good friend Nancibeth Clements of Legacyk Gundogs has worded this so well. We are preservation breeders who breed our dogs for a purpose. She has given me permission to share.
Food for thought ~

Purposefully breeding well-bred, purebred dogs is not a money-making venture—it’s a serious investment of time, money, and responsibility.

Before a litter is ever even planned, responsible breeders invest thousands into health testing to ensure their dogs are free from genetic diseases. This includes OFA testing, cardiac exams, eye certifications, and often DNA panels—none of which are optional if you’re doing things correctly.

On top of that, simply maintaining breeding dogs is a significant ongoing expense. High-quality dog food, routine veterinary care, vaccinations, preventative medications, grooming, training, and general upkeep all add up month after month, year after year—whether a dog is being bred or not.

Then comes the cost of acquiring and maintaining quality breeding dogs—well-bred dogs with proven pedigrees, correct structure, stable temperaments, and titles in conformation, hunt test, field trials, campaigning dogs, or performance sports. Monthly training, handling, entry fees, and travel all add up quickly.

When it’s time to breed, expenses continue with stud fees, progesterone testing, veterinary care, and sometimes artificial insemination. Pregnancy and whelping bring their own costs, including ultrasounds, x-rays, emergency care if needed, and proper nutrition for the dam.

Raising a litter correctly is where the real work begins. Puppies require round-the-clock care, early neurological stimulation, socialization, high-quality food, vet care, vaccinations, microchips, and constant monitoring to ensure they develop into stable, healthy dogs.

And responsible breeders don’t stop there—we stand behind every puppy for life. That means being willing to take a dog back at any point, offering support to owners, and ensuring none of our dogs ever end up in shelters.

When you add it all up, ethical breeding is expensive—often far exceeding what is made from the sale of puppies. It’s not about profit. It’s about preservation, purpose, and producing dogs that are healthy, sound, and capable of doing the job they were bred for.
