UPDATE on the mare and foal situation. First we would like to give a little more information on what exactly happened. Maybelline (first foal) delivered a healthy filly with a relatively easy and quick birth. However the filly was unable to nurse and Maybelline became increasingly difficult so the vet came and we were able to tube the foal colostrum with in three hours of birth and get the mare manageable so the foal could nurse on its own. The Mare was showing signs of sliding down hill during the day, this resulted in finding retained placenta and a minor tear. The mare is extremely difficult to palpate being maiden, and having several complications with treatment. Briefly, treatment included for the mare, two flushes with antibiotics and two IV runs of antibiotics, fluids and calcium. And on lots of drugs including antibiotics and painkillers. The foal has received plasma transfusions twice. As the mares milk had zero antibodies transfer (her milk was no good) and were not registering on the IGg and was only half way there at 24 hours after the first plasma transfer requiring a second, And the good news is the foal is now nursing on her own with zero assistance and now has lots of Antibodies.
At this time, I would like to say that not all heroes wear Capes……some wear navy coveralls and latex gloves. If these two horses do continue to get better and recover it will be because of our attending Veterinarians, Dr. Damita Hansen and Dr. Chris White who arrived here promptly and worked diligently for many hours and several visits. Thank you doesn’t even come close to showing how extremely appreciative we are for having you guys on our team. Again we would like to also thank our exceptional employees who have stepped up above and beyond their regular duties and really threw their heart and souls into saving the mare and foal. Also it was totally amazing to us how other Vets in the province helped us out tremendously by supplying with much needed plasma to save the foal. Dr Trevor Lawson from Fundy, helping while on Vacation, and Avon Animal Hospital Both came to our aid with plasma.
The Vets in this Province are over Worked and sometimes Under appreciated… But we so Appreciate all of you!
