Topic of the week!
This week's topic is... pulling on leash. Some of the best tips I can give to any dog parent out there is that this truly is defined by your expectation on leash. So let's dive into it with some questions to ask yourself as we delve into this topic for the week.
1. What is your true concern with pulling? Do they pull when they see certain things? Do they pull the entire walk? Do they only pull after certain events (being off leash or following an exciting interaction)
2. What do you expect of your dog? This is always a question to ask because if your expectation is a military trained dog, it's a very different course of action than a goofy family dog.
3. Do you have the appropriate tools for the job? Whether that tool is a command or and actual item like a long line or a harness, you need to be prepared for any training you want to take on.
4. Lastly, because most leash pulling happens when on walks, what is the purpose of the walk? If you are going on a walk for the dog you need to think about what the dog needs from the walk. All too often we think a walk is about walking and for a dog it can be so much more than that so we truly need to think about why we are getting the dog out.
As you ask yourself these questions think about your answers and don't hesitate to share your thoughts on the topic. I will be going through some tips and tricks to help with this each day and hope you can take away something that will help you. If you are in the Victoria area and looking for help with this or any other training needs please email, message, call or text and we will book you in as soon as possible.
