Technically, the video shows two riders approaching a bridge.
But really, it shows something else entirely. Unfortunately I didn't get the whole thing on video. But I'll tell you what happened.

Bailey took one look and said absolutely not.
Jerry took a longer look and said… maybe? Probably not.

But I didn’t ask him to be brave. I showed him where bravery lives.

I picked a tree in the distance, locked onto it, and let my whole body say, We’re going there. I’ve got you.
Jerry felt that. He didn’t trust the bridge, but he trusted me. So he followed—tentative steps, head low, feeling every flex of that long span under his feet.

He didn’t go because I made him.
He went because we’ve built a relationship where he’ll try.
Where uncertainty doesn’t shut him down.
Where my focus becomes his confidence.
Where leadership isn’t pressure—it’s partnership.

And because Jerry tried, Bailey followed.

That’s the heart of our horsemanship.
Not control. Not force.
Just two beings choosing each other, even when the ground moves beneath them.

There’s a certain kind of ride where the world shrinks down to a pair of ears, a trail, and the rhythm of a horse who feels like he’s known you forever.
Jerry was that horse today — tuned in, steady, reading the land and reading me like we’ve been doing this for decades. There’s a softness in that kind of connection, the kind that doesn’t need big moments. Just presence.

In the same moment there’s the land itself — the way it holds you when you ride through it with a quiet mind. Out here, where the trails stay empty and the only sounds are hoofbeats and the odd squirrel , you don’t feel like you’re passing through nature. You feel folded into it.

Some rides remind you that connection isn’t just between rider and horse.
It’s between rider and land.
Horse and land.
All three moving together, present and alive, like a single conversation.

Sometimes I feel that the forest speaks to us though our horses...

Today in the TrailMastery Clinic we dug into one of the most deceptively simple, absolutely essential skills in real‑world riding: mastering gates. Before anyone ever rides up to a latch, we build the prerequisites—turn on the haunches, turn on the forehand, sidepass, stepping into pressure, stepping away from pressure, and stopping to do tasks off the back of our horse.

Once those pieces were flowing, we headed out and put it all into reality. Approaching the gate, moving off it, lining up, stopping, opening the latch—every element we practiced in the arena suddenly mattered. It’s an exercise that blends precision, pressure, athleticism, and partnership in a way few obstacles can.

And the crew absolutely nailed it. Horses thinking, riders feeling, and gates opening like magic. What an awesome day.
